Would you ever buy with no ASET or idealscope?

I am considering a diamond of WF but being told that the 'diamond partner does not have the necessary tools to provide an ASET or idealscope for the diamond?' Buying online is scary enough but without these tools?? All they can give is a pic of the diamond & confirmation from the diamond partner saqys that the diamond, 'sparkle tremendously and look beautiful.' Thoughts?

Why not pick a nice in-house stone instead?

I probably would not...just me personally. There are so many diamonds that I can see that I dont see any reason to
order one that I cant see. It is a round right? You can be fairly safe picking one by the numbers but PS has made
me way to picky :wink2: .

HI:

Yes, I would. And have. From Tiffany, Cartier, etc.

cheers--Sharon

A fancy, sight unseen? Without an ASET no. Not unless you bought it, had it send to WF themselves FIRST and THEY took the ASET for you, and you can return it if you don't like it, without even getting it in. Then ok.

A MRB, maybe. With a good return policy and if it goes to WF first and they take the idealscope.

So I guess what I am saying is. I would be willing to buy as long as it meant that WF would get me the idealscope or ASET before sending it to me. And then I'd be able to return it if there was an issue with the stone immediately after the scope image.

I bought an antique cushion with no ASET or idealscope, just a video. It had a good return policy though so I would have just returned it if it didn't perform the way I wanted.

This is a very interesting question. I think it's very important to remember the context. For example, members who have been participating in this forum for a long time and have learned how to correlate aset images with physical reality.
After having done that, the aset images will have relevance.
Therefore, if you're asking the opinions of others who are familiar with this device, having ASET images may be helpful.
Personally, I never use the device as I am buying diamonds in person. Also, my personal feeling is that actual photos and videos are more informative.

Absolutely-- and do all the time.

For rounds (MRB and OEC), probably. For Fancies, no.

Just a clarification on Whiteflash policy here. Every certified diamond we sell, whether from our in-house inventory or our virtual selection category, comes with full gemological review AND light performance imaging by our team.

Our policy is detailed here. http://www.whiteflash.com/about-diamonds/whiteflash-policies/other-diamonds.htm

Any diamond we bring in is fully refundable, for any reason, should the customer decide not to complete the transaction.

When one has seen a lot of excellent cut diamonds, they have an eye for good stones. The ASET or idealscope are most useful for those are buying online and who cannot see the diamond in person. Plus we have many people coming to the forum to buy a diamond for the first time or who know nothing about diamond cut. It is most useful for them. I feel confident that I could buy diamonds for myself at this point without the images as long as I was viewing the diamond in person. But since I generally buy online, I ask for the images. I would make an exception for signed pieces that had a return policy, however.

In response to the OP, I would encourage anyone buying from WF to buy from their in-house inventory whenever possible. They specialize in well cut stones, so that is why I have bought from them!

Yes, for myself, absolutely, unless I am suspicious that a stone might have issues from the proportions or examining a photo of it, this applies both for rounds and fancies. If I am advising someone else, then it's a whole different ballgame and I have to take as responsible an approach as possible and work within the limitations we have as consumer posters. That means being able to utilize as many tools to help judge a diamond as possible, reflector images are an invaluable part of that arsenal.

Just to reiterate,

You must buy only with the right to return, which WF has, for any reason. All of the images, pictures, and what not will only give you the idea that the diamond is what you want. It will ONLY BE when YOUR EYES see the diamond that YOU can know if this is a diamond that YOU like.

You must be able to see it to know for sure. This is especially true with fancies, since numbers really tell you little about how the diamond will look with fancies.

Wink

I would and have. I've had pretty good luck choosing based on the numbers on the cert and the HCA.
