Or, at the very least - please help me identify what is wrong with it. The more I read about diamonds, and the market, the more insecure I feel about making *any* sort of decision.

Many thanks - and here are the details (these are all that I have):

Emerald Cut
Carat: 5.03
Clarity: VS2
Color: H
Measurements: 11.45 x 8.58 x 5.52
Cutlet: Long
Girdle: Slightly Thick
Finish (Polish/Symmetry/Prop): VG
Flouresence: Strong
Price: $72,000 (approximately)

My concerns are about flouresence and girdle - I don''t understad what they mean, exactly.

The stone itself, sparkles brilliantly and the few inclusions (barely visible with the loupe) are not in "key" areas.

Many thanks.

i would find out what color the 'strong' fluorescence is and if it has any adverse effect on the overall appearance.

If you are making a purchase this big, I would get more specifics about the diamond such as crown and pavillion angles and color of flourescence as belle suggested. I would also read the diamond tutorials on this site to help you in this process. You want to know exactly what you are purchasing. The girdle is the part that goes around that dimond that the prongs attach to. If it is too thick it will make the diamond look smaller than it''s true carat weight, if it is too thin there is a higher chance of chipping in the future. Thin to med, to slightly thick is fine. Just beware of very thin and thick, extremely thick.

I agree with Belle regarding the fluorescence - make sure it doesn't affect the stone adversely, although this is rare. Also I would be more concerned with the depth and table percentages, also girdle -than other measurements at the moment in an EC to be able to get an idea of the cut quality. This is a very large purchase so take your time, really look around and compare and yes, read the tutorials to study up on what to look for. You want to get this absolutely right so your money is well spent, so this diamond ( the same with any) can be enjoyed for many years to come. I wish you the best of luck in finding a SPECTACULAR diamond and we would love pics when you find it!

Here is a chart which may help. http://diamonds.pricescope.com/fnc2.asp

Also who certified this diamond? This is an important factor too.

ETA - fluorescence can be seen in some diamonds - usually blue flouro, when the diamond is exposed to UV light. It is usually noted as none or negligable, faint, med, strong, V. strong etc. Faint to med aren't often noticeable to the viewer except in bright sunlight at times or under Uv lighting, but occasionally strong or very strong can make the diamond look milky or oily in strong sunlight etc. This is very rare, but best to check. The girdle is like the " rim" around the diamond at the sides, all the way around.
