Hi all,

I''m glad to find this forum. I''m having a hard time deciding whether to buy this one particular diamond or not.
The specs are

size: 1.19
color: D
cutting: very good
symmetry: very good
clarity: SI1
fluorescent: strong blue
The price quoted by the jeweller is $8500

I''m wondering if this is a good deal, whether or not I should buy. I have a feeling the price might be a little high. I''m getting this as an engagement ring. You help and opinion are greately appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Best,
Darwin

We need more info. Who did the cert?? Crown and pavillion angles. Have you seen this stone. Strong blue is fine as long as it doesn''t make the stone appear milky or coudy. The price seems high, IMHO. But you can pricescope your stone at the top of the page to see what similar stones are going for. Not enough info on the cut, do you have an IS image???

ditto, also are you specifically looking for or wanting a D color? That will dramatically increase the price..

Thanks for the replies. The cert is from GIA, I did not take a closer look at the cert, but it is D color, SI1, 1.19ct with strong blue fluorescent. I also remember somewhere in the cert where it has the symmetry, it is stated as very good and very good. It looks good with the blue fluor, but I''m wondering if its a good buy. The jeweller quoted $8500 for it. Should I get more discount on this stone?

Thanks,
Darwin

You should get more information on this stone. Call the jeweler tommorow and ask him for all the information from the cert... and post it. THEN we''ll be able to tell you if it''s a good deal or not. Right now, we really can''t say.

Thanks Gypsy, appreciate your help. Will post more information as soon as I get them.

You're welcome... I should warn you though, that's as helpful as I'm gonna be able to be. I'm not a round expert by any means... but I do know what the experts need to be able to help. Good luck!

ETA: angle numbers, dimensions... you name it. Just look at other threads asking about round specs and see the information they give Dee Jay's is a good example.

Umm.. ETA, ETA??? Kaleigh reminded me... WELCOME TO PS!

Darwin,
I am sorry that I didn''t give you a proper welcome to PS

So welcome and look forward to getting the extra info you need. We''ll be happy to help you as much as we can.

Hi Darwin,

I'm sure someone probably said this already (I haven't read all the posts) I *personally* wouldn't buy a strong blue - D. It can make a diamond look milky or cloudy particularly with the high colors D and E. I'd buy a medium blue - especially after seeing it with my own eyes - but not strong or very strong.

Stick around - you'll get good guidance and knowledge.

Gypsy - that E SI you listed is a beaute!

Scintillating...

Based on the limited info given I''d stay away. Strong FL plus D color is a risky proposition, in my amateurish opinion. Milkiness as others have stated is a possibility. Don''t know if you''d consider going down in color, but Fs and Gs are pretty darn icy white and will let you buy you a lot more diamond. We''ll need cut information (crown and pavilion angles, girdle info, for example) to help further. :)

Welcome to PS!

Thank you everyone for your kind advice and opinions. I searched the forum and it seems to me 50% of the people here like the blue fluor and the other 50% do not like it. I also tried to compare it with similar specs on bluenile and for 1.2ct with D color and SI1 clarity, they are going for around $7800 at most without any fluor. The store is quoting me $8500 for it (D, SI1, strong blue fluor). As far as I understand, there should be a discount for diamonds with fluor, especially strong blue.

I will try to look at the diamond under direct sunlight to see if its hazy.

Thanks again y''all.

Darwin, you won''t find 50% supporting strong blue. There are maybe a handful who like strong blue, but the 50% number might more accurately describe those who''d accept or prefer faint to medium blue florescence.

you can see check out a thread with pics of rings that all have stones with strong blue fluor.here. several of them are D''s or E''s.
ecf8503 has a gorgous solitaire D, strong blue flour. you can read about it here
..i think it''s a stone by stone thing, some are milky, some aren''t. here''s a pic. of ecf''s gorgeous ring.

As far as I know blue fluor. isn''t the neg. it used to be and not affecting the price as much

. definitely worth comparision shopping and trying to negotiate down the price with you jeweler if you love the stone..

Scintillating-- I wish I could say that I knew what I was doing when I picked that one, but I can''t. I still know nothing about Rounds in terms of pavillion and crown and such... BUT I have learned to read an IS... lol. It looked pretty nice to me, though. Good to know I''ve learned something.

Thanks, mrss! (Congrats on your new stone, btw!)

I too was hesitant about fluoresence at first, but after I saw my stone I changed my mind! I personally find fluoresence to be a unique feature, and in my stone it does not have any detrimental effects (i.e. no milkiness, etc). I wanted the cool tone of a D and to me the SB fluor only enhances that. If you have not yet seen the GIA study re: fluor that was published in 1997, it is certainly an eye-opening educational read, with great pics!

You can see my stone in my avatar under a blacklight -

If you''ve seen your stone in person, and you like it, then the fluor shouldn''t be a negative thing - hopefully you''ll become a convert to the pro-fluor crowd!
