Would love any opinions on this 3ct antique cushion!

Hi everyone

I’m so thankful to have found this community and it led me to a wonderful jeweler to help me find a diamond for an engagement ring (with my boyfriend in tow). I wanted your thoughts on this 3ct L VS1 before I fully commit, knowing that I had my heart set on a nice chunky old mine. This antique cushion doesn’t seem to have that chunkiness and kind of an interesting cut? Also, in some lights the L is in this in-between warmth that I’m not sure about but may be the setting. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I’m not crazy about the cut at all. The cut makes the facets look chaotic, and if you had your heart set on big chunky facets…I’d pass.

I’d listen to your gut. You are hesitating for a reason.

The warmth is personal preference, it’ll definitely look warmer in some lights versus others, this has little to do with the setting. I don’t care for warm stones, so I’d rather drop in size. That’s just my preference. Does the warmth bother you?

Hmmm...I'm not crazy about the faceting pattern either. Looks like it has a long open culet kind of like an emerald cut stone.
(could be wrong here).

I love the color and the size looks amazing on your hand. You have to be the one who loves the look of it though.

"I had my heart set on a nice chunky old mine." This makes me think you should keep looking. I worry if you buy this
one that you may still be looking for that chunky old mine cut.

I don’t like it for a number of reasons. The faceting pattern looks all crazy and I almost feel like I’m seeing a slight fish eye effect, and the culet is just weird for the cut. It’s all out of sorts IMO. Only things I like are the size and the color. I’d definitely pass on this one.

Thanks for all the honest responses ! The crazy faceting may be contributing to all the colors and sparkles that lure me in? I’ll have to do some hard thinking - I’m not opposed to something a bit different but definitely wouldn’t want it to impact it’s value if I want to upgrade in the future and it seems like the faceting is a bit of a con.

I actually wanted a UV at first but my boyfriend wanted something white and traditional. The L seemed like a good compromise but wouldn’t want it to look unintentionally warm, if that makes sense!

Yeah I don't love it either. Generally with an antique cushion there is a keel - kinda like what you see in emerald cuts that I don't love. And the faceting is confusing. I think you could find something better - especially if your heart is set on an old mine cut.

If you have the time and patience, I'd pass on it and keep looking...

Also, if you are drawn to U-V, convince your boyfriend. You’ll regret going with his preference.

Keep in mind that lighting stores (if that’s where this is filmed) is ideal for diamonds and very different than regular lighting outside or in your home.

I agree with everyone else about the faceting, and even more so that you seem to not love it, which is the most important thing. I think going for an L isn't necessarily the right kind of compromise here - it is neither white like your fiance seems to want nor quite tinted like you do. (I've seen gorgeous Ls here, this isn't a knock on it as a color, it just doesn't seem like either of you gets what you really want that way.)

As to the desire he has v you on color- it's your ring. Ideally, it should be pleasing to both because of what it is, but I would give this serious thought.

I like warm stones. Own multiple. But I think you need to see the stones in multiple light conditions. Sometimes these low colors look very different outside vendor lighting.

Also, L is not "white." You really need to be at I or above to look potentially "white" so I don't even think it's a good compromise.

For what it's worth I actually dont mind the stone as a weird / unique cut, but for someone who really likes antique stones I don't think it will make you happy overall. Its definitely not a chunky or traditional old mine at all.

As an update, I’m off tomorrow to see some good ol’ chunky mines to help me decide! This is one of them. Are there any concerns about the report that I should discuss? I do notice the little mark in the culet and the additional inscription and graining comments in the report but they could be minor and negligible to the eye.

It’s very deep, which you might love the look of, even if it sacrifices some length and width. See if you can see the culet feather with your eyes. The stone is lovely

I like the look of it. I love the maltese cross, the kozibe, the small table and the large culet. It is white too which is a bonus if you love the colour. Has pretty good dimensions for a 2.68ct - 69% is not too deep at all. But yes it will face up smaller than an OEC or other modern cuts. Let us know how you go! Happy diamond shopping!

I think it's a beautiful stone with good stats and I love the proportions. At the VS2 grading, it's very probable that the feather and graining aren't visible to the naked eye (which would be great). Personally I'm partial to classic deep old mine cuts and the chunky profile appeals to me in settings, so I don't mind that they face up smaller than later cuts and "spreadier" ones. I think you'll find out what you prefer after looking at a good few of them!

I meant to comment on the first stone that you posted - the facets also appeared somewhat chaotic to me, and although it's not without its charm (seems like it can be sparkly and I believe it will look nice in some settings), it's not a knockout classic old cut to me and I think it would be risky as the centre for an engagement ring unless you feel connected to it. Good luck viewing the stones tomorrow (ahhh so exciting), and please keep us posted!

Hi everyone!

I wound up seeing both the 2.68 and the 3.37 and compared it to the antique….and I actually went with the antique! When they’re right next to each other, I just kept going back to the color and the way the antique sparkles. Seems I prefer chaos…which in retrospect is a bit true and amusing. It was a super hard decision as they were all GORGEOUS and I felt like there was no wrong answer (and always an opportunity for a chunky right hand ring in the future!)

Shoutout to Adam who is a delight to work with and can’t wait to design the ring!

here’s a video of me playing with it earlier if anyone would like to see. Thinking a 3 stone ring with 0.8ish OMCs or side stones with bullets/shields?? Throw in some lovely milgrain or accent diamonds to give it texture? Very excited for it all!

I vote a 3 stone with baguettes.. like this one:
