Hi all

So here is round 2 of my search for a stone. Popped into a jeweller i don't know today and he happened to have a stone which was the size I'm looking for and at a good price. Please let me know what you think:

Round Brilliant (IGI Certificate)
2.02 carat
Ideal Cut
F colour
SI2 Clarity (completely eye clean as far as I could tell. The grading report showed 4 or 5 speck size inclusions
but I couldn't see these at all with the nakes eye. Through the loupe they were slightly more visible, but were white in colour, not the black I'm used to. It really looked a lot cleaner than similar size SI1 and VS2 stones I've seen!)
Cut: EX
Polish: EX
Sym: EX
Meas: 8.03-8.08 x 5.05
Table: 55.5%
Crown Height-Angle: 16%-36o
Pavillion Depth: 43%-40.7o
Girdle: Medium (faceted)
Culet: Pointed
Depth 62.5%
Fluorescence: None

What do you guys think? He wants USD 11,280 for it.

Thanks in advance!

Borderline case, probably have slight leakage but will need IS to confirm. Color / clarity could be off, so need an independent appraiser to look at the loose stone.

Thanks very much for your advice Stone-cold11. Unfortunately don''t have access to Imagescope in this part of the world though

What makes you say its a borderline case?
Also, apart from the leakage issue, is the EX/EX/EX and ideal cut reassuring? do the measurements make for a good diameter/size for the carat weight? Is it possible to have an SI2 with only white inclusions that seems cleaner than a stone of a higher clarity grade?
SOrry for all the questions but I am very inexperienced at this and any more information you could provide would be very useful :)

Too cheap. Something is off, I am afraid.

Rambar, it's absolutely possible. My SI2 is just such an example; when I was a consumer and we were purchasing, my SI2 stone was actually deemed cleaner than the SI1 stone it was being compared to.

You mention the stone is graded by IGI; I'm not sure where you are located, but here in the States, their grading is quite lenient. By comparison, if you were purchasing a similar stone graded by AGS or GIA, the cost would be several thousand dollars more for a J stone, nevermind for an F. There has to be a reason the stone is priced so low, and I'd be sure to find out what it is before committing.

If you think this is the stone for you, I'd make sure the vendor has a generous return period (return, not exchange) and bring it to a trusted independent appraiser (which means not another jeweler who may have a conflict of interest).

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your comment Paul-Antwerp. I have been quoted anything from RAP -33% to RAP -48% here in Dubai on most stones I have seen and in several different shops. This one I am getting RAP -43% on. I think maybe they are just cheaper here?

Edit:

Thanks also Allison, I will try to see what the jeweller has to say regarding return policies. They aren't usually offered in Dubai on anything but perhaps I can put some pressure on him! I'm very reassured that you are saying your SI2 is similar in that its clearer than its grading would lead you to believe. At least I know that it's possible now!

Which part of the world are you in? IGI grading is weak over here in the US but apparently quite strong over in Asia. So the color and clarity comment might not mean anything over in your part of the world. Cut wise, it requires the table, crown and pavilion angle to work well together. In this case, it is slightly off, might result in slight leakage or no leakage depending on how big the lower half is. Best to check with an Idealscope image. You can buy a scope online, the basic scope is quite cheap at 25USD, considering what you are paying for the stone.

Still, that is too much of a discount. Do you have independent appraisers over in Dubai?

Is the stone loose or in a sealed container?

Thanks Stone-cold11, I will ask around and see if it''s possible to get a Diamond appraised independently here. I just wish I knew someone here who had a clue about Diamonds to provide me with a sanity check, at least. I know several in London where I used to live but unfortunately no one here that has even the faintest idea about what to look for.

The stone has been taken out of its container, but I already asked and he will send it back to the lab to get it resealed for a small fee (USD 30) which he has said he would pay. I compared the inclusions marked off on the Grading Report to the ones I could see at 10x and they matched so I''m pretty confident theres no ''switcheroo'' happening here lol

You misunderstood my question. I am happy that the stone is not in its container.

Ah, apologies, I thought that you were voicing a concern that I had straight away whilst in the store.

On that note, if anyone is in Dubai and knows of an independent appraiser who could look at this stone for me I would be very happy to hear from you and would be willing to pay for the service. Please let me know if you can help!
