I am new to PS and need your opinions please!

I am considering 2 RB stones which would cost me about the same.

The 1st one is 1.56 (G, VS1, AGS Ideal 0):

Depth 60.1%
Table: 55.7%
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Girdle: thin to medium
Cutlet: none
Crown Angle: 32.4
Crown %: 14.1
Pavillion Angle: 41.1
Pavillion %: 43.5
Flr: none
Measurm:
7.55 x 7.61 x 4.56

This stone got HCA score of 1.1

The 2nd stone is 1.94 (H, eye clean Si1, Premium cut, GIA Certified):
Depth: 62.7%
Table: 58%
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very good
Grdle: Thin to medium
Cutlet: None
Crown Angle: 35.5
Pavillion Angle: 41.2
Flr: none
Measurm.: 7.9 x 7.95 x 4.97

HCA score is 4.6

I really like the size of the 2nd stone (1.94 vs 1.56) , however I am not sure if it is worth sacrificing a cut for a larger stone?

Which one would you choose?

HI:

Have you seen these stones, IRL? What did your eyes say?

cheers--Sharon

I personally wouldn''t, but that is my preference. A well cut stone will outshine a not so well cut stone any day of the week.

I say hands-down the first one! Cut is what makes a diamond really sparkle. I'd take an ideal cut diamond over an inferior cut any day, no matter what the size. I'd rather have a tiny ball of fire than a huge dud any day!

ETA: Also, the 2nd diamond is cut deep, so it won't even face up as big as it should anyway.

I completely agree! Without a question, I''d go with the first diamond...

Which diamond do you think is the larger carat in the diagram below?

The stone on the left is actually smaller carat weight (ca. 0.8 carat) than the one on the right ( ca. 1 carat), but it looks larger because it has the topmost cut quality and hence is returning light from edge-to-edge.

In strong agreement with the previous posters on this thread, CUT quality is KING - it is the KEY to sparkle AND visual apparent size!
A well-cut diamond will LOOK bigger and sparkle more than a commercial or average cut larger carat diamond!

1st stone too, no competition.

you are comparing H SI1 to G VS1.
Find a well cut H SI1.

As others have shown, you will find (especially when dirty) the smaller stone looks bigger.

The first stone is a touch deep, but hardly a train wreck, I would be far more concerned about the crown and pavilion angles not being a good combo, so I would also pick the first one. If you wanted a larger stone however there could be a chance you could find one of good proportions which isn''t cut to top standards, but will still have sparkle and fire a plenty!

Hi Lorelei,

I think that you wanted to say that the second stone is too deep.

Just trying to avoid confusion.

As for Garry''s comment, he is absolutely right. You cannot compare a G-VS1 with a H-SI1, and then look at cut as the main cause for a price-difference (or a potential size-difference in this case).

Hi Paul - aaagh! Not enough coffee when I posted that, teach me to read more carefully, thank you!

imho the place to cut if you want to go larger is from h&a to near h&a or even just so-so optical symmetry(few broken hearts and misaligned arrow heads) with great angles.
It makes far less difference than going from great angles to so-so angles.

Thank you all very much for your comments!

I agree with the choice of the first one.

.45 mm isnt going to be as pleasuble as being able to look down and see arrows...

its a great feeling realizing your diamond is really well cut.
