Worried about Ring Size

I thought I had a clever way to get her ring size by taking the ring she wears on her right hand ring finger (she is right handed) and placed it on my pinky finger. It lined up perfectly with the first crease on my finger. Then, I planned to take my pinky to a jeweler and get it measured BUT......

After reading the boards, I am confused. First off, the right hand ring is a little loose (it''s easy to turn on her finger but the not so loose where the gem rolls around a lot).

I have heard that the left ring finger should be about 1/4 smaller? Is that right?
What if my pinky has swollen or changed in size (weather effects)?
I have also read that the Vatche setting is difficult to get resized?

Now, I''m not sure what to do......any idea''s? Should I stick with my plan to get my pinky sized and then go down 1/4th?

That''s a hard call, especially if this setting may pose sizing issues down the road. Perhaps you should err on the side of caution and look for another way to find out her ring size.

Also, I am right handed and my left hand ring finger is a bit bigger than my right hand. Unusual but not unheard of.

Any chance you could take her ring shopping for fun and have her try on a standard size ring to see how it fits?

there is no guaranteed standard computation for sizing between different fingers. everyone''s finger sizes and shapes are different and you can''t say that the ring finger is always 1/4 smaller on the other hand. if someone tried to guess my ring size by going down a 1/4, i would have a ring that is almost a full size too big for my left hand and 1/4 too small for my right.

i think if you don''t have a way to get her left hand ring size, make sure you get at least a size you know fits.

I know its an obvious answer so you may have heard/discarded the idea before, but I''d think that to keep it secret you need to enlist the help of a trusted ''other'' who can innocently gossip about such things and find out that way- if she knows her own size!- suprisingly,when compared to here, not everyone does.

Or how about looking at the costume jewellery in a department store that has sized rings on display and work it out that way, it could always be a daft moment happening because of an OTT ring you spotted, or for your'' Sister'' ,or ''Mum with Christmas coming it''s the ideal excuse.

Hope these are of some use- rather than just naively annoying suggestions.

Just thought, how about buy her the stone of your choice and take her with you for the purchase of the setting.

Not sure what vatche setting you''re looking at, but I have the x prong in plat. It is very easy to have it sized. The part that can be hard is that if you want to keep their warranty, you have to send it to vatche and have them do it, which can take weeks. I had it done at a local jeweler b/c I didn''t care about the warranty (what can go wrong with with simple platinum solitaire, other than prong issues, which I doubt is covered under any warranty anyway because it is wear and tear)? It took my jeweler about 15 minutes and looks great.

Does she know you are going to propose, but does''t know when? If so, I second what the other poster said about going to a jewlery store and getting her sized there. Thats exactly what I did with my GF, but I told her she wont know when I will do it

. Or, if you dont want to go that route, I have another trick up my sleeve

, can you steal one of her rings she doesn''t wear at the moment and get that sized. Make sure its a ring she just doesnt like anymore, rather than one that doesn''t fit anymore. And rule number 2-- NEVER EVER TELL HER YOUR ON A DIAMOND FORUM, lol.

It may not be as difficult as you think finding the information. Girlfriends are always trying on each others rings. Mothers usually know the size as they have purchased a ring for a gift one time or another. Exhaust all avenues first...

I know both my sisters in law ring finger size...my mothers pinkie, ring and index, I also know my manicurist ring size and she knows mine.

Ask the "home girls" first!

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question regarding the ring size. How tight should the ring be? My engagement ring is a size 5.5 (as are all my other rings), but it seems like the ring is loose (maybe because the band is thin) because it keeps spinning on my finger and when I wash my hands I am worried its going to slip off and fall into the sink!

But, when it gets warm again, my finger is going to swell a little so what do you think I should do? Size or not to size??

Chil1: I have heard that too, that it is difficult to size it without messing up the stamp. However for mine, the stamp is near the head of the diamond not at the back of the shank, so it was not a problem!

How do I like the setting: I LOVE it! It was exactly what my husband and I had in mind when he first proposed, but we got something cheaper so he could use his whole budget for the stone. We upgraded for an early 5 year anniv. It is fabulous! I couldn''t be happier. It looks great and is very comfortable. It feels substantial but not chunky. It is very classic, while a little more interesting than a plain solitaire. The only issue is finding a band to fit precisely flush. A straight band leaves a very slight gap which bugs some people, but others not at all. I first bought a straight band. They looked nice together but I felt like they were clanking against eachother as I moved. I returned it and ended up with the Vatche curved band. I like it a lot, but I don''t love it - keep wondering if it is a little too thick. however, I do like that they are a matched set, and it is also very comfortable and seems to be great quality. I am also hoping for a thin diamond eternity band in the future to have variety

A careful benchmen most likely can size the ring w/o obliterating the brand "signature".

That said, I''m right handed and my left hand size is *considerably* smaller. Rings that fit my right hand don''t fit my left & visa versa. So, try to pin the size down better before ordering the ring.

If you do a search on the topic of finding out her ring size, you will find plenty of upfront & devious methods.

Either ask someone who will know, ask her or get it sized later.

It is too diffrent from person to person and it temps. I can wear from 5 1/4 to a 61/4 on my right hand and a 51/4 to a 6 on my left. Usally I wear a six on either.

This may not sound like the most romantic way to handle it, but it worked for us....

DH & I had been talking about marriage and an upcoming proposal, so one day, when we were "window shopping" for rings, my future-DH pulled me into a jewelry store and said, ''I want to know your ring size so when that day comes, I can order the right size for you." We went into the jeweler''s and got my finger measured....good thing too as my left and right ring fingers are the same size!!! If he''d tried that 1/4-size down rule, my ring wouldn''t have fit!!!

He proposed months later, but the ring fit perfectly!!!!
