It was sold at Sotheby''s Hong Kong for a whopping US$7,980,000.00 total... or US$1,320,000.00 million per carat

Making it the most expensive gemstone in the world, per carat, sold at auction.

Yep..., at “Moussaieff Jewellers” in London..., good luck the owner is as "wacky" as the prices she is willing to pay.

She actually broke the last world record 20 years ago when she paid for a 0.90 carat Red Diamond US$912,832.00 per carat.

Amazing. Here I am familiar with the history and pricing of fancies, and yet I am still continually amazed when stones like this bring the money they do.

It's definitely an example of the impact of rarity over beauty. Pretty stone, but definitely not a 1.3 million dollar per carat visual presentation in my eyes.

Kind of like Van Gogh's $55 million dollar pot of flowers. I wonder if that Japanese buyer ever sold that painting, and whether he made a profit or took a loss.

I see where you are coming from..., but here is a thought...

As per your knowledge..., what is/was the maximum price ever paid for Jewelry..., any type (Rare, History, provenance etc..., etc...)

As per my recollection..., I have yet seen a piece of jewelry fetch 30-50 Million Dollars..., (I actually think the most I have seen was in the neighborhood of US$15 Mil. +/-)

In my opinion..., if jewelry has the potential to follow other art categories..., the sky is the limit...

I think it depends on which currency best represents the buyer''s net worth. If the buyer is shopping with euros, this stone is cheaper than the red one (in past dollars).

The dollar has fallen against all world currencies this year. Even flaky ones like the Lebonese dollar. I am not surprised to see US dollar priced assets selling for a lot of USdollars.

Gold and oil, both assets priced in US dollars on the world market, are soaring too.

I just love that it''s an emerald-cut. woohoo!

The blue diamond is gorgeous, the all are (and how rare!)

- but would I just get a sapphire instead for much, much, much less? The answer is yes... IMO.

It''s gorgeous, but I''d be scared to wear it.

It''s a beauty. Aah to have that kind of cash to spend on bling.

Geneva: Sotheby''s Magnificent Jewels:

"...highlighted by the sale of the largest, purest white flawless brilliant-cut diamond ever offered at auction. The stone was acquired by Georges Marciano, founder of Guess? jeans, who paid $16,189,769 for the stone -- the second highest price for a diamond at auction, and at $191,980 a carat, the highest price per carat ever paid for a white diamond at auction.

Marciano has already exercised his right to name the diamond, which is now known as the ‘Chloe Diamond.’..."

"...Further highlights in the sale included an extremely rare Fancy Vivid Blue pear-shaped diamond, weighing 4.16 carats and mounted as a ring. This magnificent piece of jewelry was sold for CHF5,313,000 ($4,727,986) against a pre-sale estimate of CHF3.85-5 million. The per-carat price for tonight’s stone was $1,136,535, making it the second highest price per carat paid for a colored diamond at auction..."
