I've seen some posts by others get some amazing advice. Evaluating diamonds makes me feel a little out of my element, so I thought I should quit lurking and ask for some input directly. Really hoping to get a big reaction from my lady.

For both stone and setting, my goal was around $6000. Right now I'm looking at about $6500. Can't go much higher than that without going into debt.

I know she wants round. I'm going for G-H color, would obviously prefer G. Eye-clean is my only requirement for clarity.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.90-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-350804 I've got my eye on this one at the moment. I'm not sure if I should be worried about the fluorescence, or if those specks in the table will be visible from ~6 inches away.

This is the setting I'm considering: http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/platinum-thin-french-cut-pave-set-diamond-engagement-ring-item-2018.. It's very similar to one she's pinned on pinterest.

I'm considering requesting an ASET from James Allen, but first I was hoping to get some assurance that these would be an attractive combination (and hopefully good value) from someone with some experience evaluating these things. Thanks!

I do not this you would be happy with that setting in real life. The CAD looks great, but the RL photos make it look a bit cheap. You don't want that. Is platinum a setting requirement?

I am not a 60/60 expert, and prefer smaller tables myself, but if your interested might as well get an ASET, its free.

However, if you Didn't go with that cheapest plat setting but needed diamonds in the shank, i don't know what setting you would get from them

consider this

Or if you really want to wow her with color.

After further review on GOG website they have this!

http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/11717/ - Price is just under 4500

I would show them a picture of the pinterest ring you found and see what platinum settings they have similar for 2k or less

they sell Vatche at GOG. So does whiteflash. WF has these Vatche settings under 2k... So, you'd think that GOG would be able to do that under 2k as well

Thanks for the ideas!

I really am new at this - I didn't intend to limit myself to only 60/60.

I agree with you Niel, that the RL photos of that first diamond are not spectacular. The option you presented in your second post looks really attractive to me since it would open more options for the setting. I also actually really like that "melody" setting.

Plat is preferred but not required- wg would work if necessary.

If you like that one diamond I would recommend hitting reserve so it doesn't get snatched out from under you. You can always reserve it first then call GoG on Tuesday when they come back from their weekend to discuss settings.

Do you mind posting the exact photo from her pinterest? I'd like to see the setting.

She's actually got a few up on pinterest, three attached below. I chose that first one because it was a near match with a low price. In general I know she mentioned once preferring 4-prongs, and one of the comments she left on the photos indicates she wants a relatively thin shank.

I'm a little concerned about getting the setting from gog, due to lack of a return policy. I'd really like the ability to exchange in case the fiancee ends up wanting something else. From the variety she's posted, I don't think she's got anything specific in mind, but at the same time I know she can be a little picky. *Sigh* I really wish I could just talk with her directly about it, but she's too old fashioned for that.

One great thing about a gal that's old fashioned is that most of all the cares about the thought and effort you put in. Often times girls that specifically DONT want to have input don't want to return there rings (assuming you at least TRIED to make it what she would like) because they get emotionally attached to the ring you propose with.

The first setting looks like the one I originally purchased from whiteflash! It was really beautiful, I lost that ring and went for a solitaire this time but I still love that setting, might I suggest having a look at whiteflash as they have a generous return policy & upgrade policy and they have a lot of gorgeous settings similar to what you have posted, they also deal in super ideal H&A diamonds and expert selection (diamonds that narrowly missed ACA status however still ideal cut and display hearts & arrows patterning) I have a expert selection my last one was an ACA and I love love love them both! :)

I looked all over JA and i didn't find any stone over .85 cts that i really liked. I know this one is a little deep but you can see its a good performer.

Or if you want to get as close to a ct as possible, pick the .96 from GOG and consider.

this if its in budget

OP, if you can swing it, the first one Niel linked to is really nice! The second one is nice too, just a little more dainty... :))
