Woman fired after donating kidney for boss

I saw this too. I wonder if the boss did not have the juice to get her some slack (sorry for mixed metaphors). No doubt the company was in the wrong, I just wonder if the direct supervisor is being painted in an unfairly unflattering light. It's definitely a more salacious story when framed that way.

That story is so one sided. So many things might have happened. Who knows. Hope the woman has a good lawyer and LOTS of emails and other documentation. Still and all, if it happened anywhere like that, it's a very sympathetic story and the employer will likely settle it and try to keep it way the heck away from a jury.

And maybe I'm incredibly uncharitable, but it would have to be someone REALLY special for me to give up a KIDNEY for, and I sincerely doubt it would be anyone I worked for. The list of people I would do it for is WOW count on one hand short.

I agree with this. This story is in the news over here today as well and my first thought was that I would have been a lot more selective about who I hugely compromised my own health for.

EXACTLY!!! I mean come on it's a KIDNEY. You only get TWO of those in your life.

I'll donate a kidney for guaranteed lifetime employment. Oh whoops, that isn't how it works. I'm actually surprised that the hospital approved this donation - there are many psychological tests one must go through before donating or receiving a kidney.

Yeah, this is a strange story - I agree that the company will settle because the this would be tough going in front of a jury, it would no doubt feel a lot of sympathy for this woman (I have sympathy for her too). But isn't the donation a personal decision that this woman made? Is the company obligated to keep her on because of a decision she made in her personal life? I think I read in one article that she just assumed she would be with this company until she retired. Maybe she shouldn't have assumed that? And maybe the woman who benefited from the donation had no pull as to the termination. I don't know, hard to get a read on exactly what went on here. I guess I sound cold-hearted, but just trying to step back and look at this objectively. I do feel badly for her in that she won't have health coverage now and she apparently still needs medical care because of the operation.

I remember a story my husband told me about his boss - when promoted, the boss stopped interacting with people on a personal level and when asked why he said "because I might have to fire them someday." The business world can be pretty cold.

SRSLY. My DH sent me a link to this because the boss sounds a LOT like my former partner who pulled something enormously obnoxious of a similar magnitude.

I have a feeling there is a lot more going on than what was told.

Call me cynical.

The only people on earth I would give my kidney to is one of my 4 kids, or if I had a grandchild one day. I would give my life for my kids.

But a boss, nope.

I told SO about this story and he said, "Did she think she was going to get special privileges?"

It sounds to me that that is exactly what she thought. What a mess

I don't doubt this woman. I don't doubt your former partner pulled something of similar magnitude. If people will hunt down humans like prey in the street, as you noted in another thread, a boss will use an employee to get a kidney. Bad people do use people, so think about it. Why not for a kidney. Actually, it makes perfect sense. One gave her kidney. The other didn't care if that woman lived or died. It's really not all that surprising, save why anyone would donate a kidney to their boss.

And that logic could also be applied in the reverse: why would a person give a kidney to a boss if there wasn't something in for her (or she thought there was)? I wouldn't find that surprising at all either. After all, bad people do use people and that can go either way.

I really have the feeling that there is a whole lot more to that story than was told.

Something about her story seems off. Her facial expression, her darting eyes when she talks about how her boss changed and what's up with having half of her face covered by bangs? I feel awful saying it, but I truly get the sense that she's not as innocent as she is making herself sound.

Her lawyer is icky
