Hi all,

I have just ordered my first diamond for an e-ring from one of the major online retailers to be delivered here in Norway. I unfortunately found this great website after ordering - and on the Holloway model I am only scoring 2.7. Anyway - I will post the specs and perhaps people can tell me what I can expect to receive (I am tracking it with FedEx and it is in France - so will be here shortly !!)

0.84 Carat / G Colour / VS1 Clarity / Excellent Cut from GIA (called Ideal Cut from vendor)
Polish and Symmetry Excellent (GIA cert) / No cutlet or flourescence
Table 57% / Depth 62.5% / Pavillion 40.8 / Crown 35.5

So before I thought the scary part would be asking my lady for her hand in marriage but now I am more worried that my stone will be not what I was after. The Ideal cut maybe not so Ideal?

Thanks in advance - Great website and discussions !!

Hi, and welcome to Pricescope!!

While the HCA gives a 2.7, its important to remember that this is only a guideline. I personally bought a diamond that also scored a 2.7, and I thought it looked better than some that scored well under 2. It depends on the individual diamond. The specs you posted are very close to the ideal range, so my guess is that you will not be able to notice any difference. You have a great color and clarity grade, so you don''t have to worry about that. From my (limited) experience, I''d say that you''ve got a gorgeous stone and don''t worry about it at all!! Congratulations!

Welcome to Pricescope,

I think it should be a pretty stone going by the numbers, I wouldn''t worry too much!

Hi Nordic - Welcome to Pricescope.

The GIA Excellent cut grade has some trouble areas at the steep/deep end but your diamond is not in this extreme. With those basic numbers it will face up around 6mm with a crown height of 15%+, giving it a nice fiery look with lots of rainbow flashes.

“Ideal” is a much abused term in the diamond trade. AGS set a strict standard when they began using the term as their highest grade for cut in the 90s, and the word gained notoriety. Unfortunately some sellers slap the word "ideal" on diamonds without using such strict standards. In your case it’s not too bad; while the numbers you posted would not earn AGS Ideal, 57/40.8/35.5 is predicted to score AGS2 or AGS3 in light performance, which is still better than the majority of commercial cuts.

I have no doubt your lady will be thrilled when you make the presentation. In fact, if you like the idea, I suggest you “pop the question” in an area well lit by many small, direct light sources. That will bring out dramatic fire and scintillation when you open the box.

There are probably better options. If you asked for the highest score available on HCA for this type of quality or size then with a little digging the right person could help find you the ultimate one in your search

Thanks to all for the replies. Well the FedEx box has just arrived at my desk here in Oslo. 10 days from ordering to arrival - 4 of which it sat in customs here while I waited for a bill for the tax / duty fees. I am not brave enough to open it but will do so later tonight and report back tomorrow - and post some pics after the proposal.

Fingers crossed

LOL! You are made of stronger stuff than I by not opening the box!! I bet it will be a lovely diamond!

I''m sure it will be great! 2.7 is not so far off from 2.0 and I doubt any non-expert will be able to look at it and tell you that. I''m sure she''ll be thrilled, and like John said, it''s still going to be nicer than most.

Well I left work yesterday with any number of questions going through my head ...... will the stone look too small on the channel band? ....... will a round be ok on a channel band? ..... why didnt I know about the HCA before ordering? ...... should I have seen an actual picture before ordering?

It is amazing how one can start to second guess ones self when armed with soooo much useful information.

So got home from work - opened a beer - and then opened my package. It was a grey rainy evening in Oslo so not much light to speak of - and ...... it was beautiful.

I was really impressed with the ring and it was such a relief. So much nicer than anything I had seen for similar prices here in Oslo. Up close it is cold and white from above and crystal clear viewed from the side. From about a meter or two away the slighest movement produces beautiful sparkle with small dashes of color eminating. I really cannot wait to see it under a well lit environment.

So now its off on holidays Friday - final report with pictures in a couple of weeks - and no doubt the good news !!

Thanks for the comments and everyone who contributes here as the information was vital in helping with my decision - still a little peeved I managed to miss the HCA before purchasing but in the end all is well that ends well - I guess my next purchase will be even all the more beautiful.

Cheers

Nordic, my diamond scores 2.8 on the HCA and I get so many comments on how sparkly and beautiful my stone is. So I wouldn''t worry as the HCA can''t see the diamond, it is only predicting by the info it has, the proof of the pudding is in the seeing so to speak!
