Will jewelers set ring they didn't sell for fee?

I want to purchase a three stone ring setting for a reset. I want one with pear sidestones. There are not any local jewelers who carry this type of setting and I don't know that I trust any local jewelers enough to go the custom route. I like Brian Gavin's Summer setting but am too nervous to send my setting through the mail. I'm wondering if it might be possible to order The Summer and have it set locally with my center stone. Would this be possible or is this something jewelers don't do? Alternately, do you think this would be a straight forward setting to try to have made locally?

I would check with BGD that they sell the setting without a diamond purchase.

Ditto; some jewelers will not sell a setting alone without a diamond. But I've had several jewelers set stones in settings I did not buy from them, so I think the harder part will be getting the setting without a diamond.

A lot of B&M stores don't have a bench person on site, so I would make sure that who ever you choose to set the stone was setting it on site and with an experienced bench. If you decide to go custom I would also make sure that you had an oppurtunity to talk to the person doing the work first hand and that you had a chance to see other custom settings that he has made in the past. You will probably want to make sure that he has made settings similar to the one your asking him to create for you as well.

I think that you can purchase settings without purchasing the diamond at most online vendors. I know that JA will set your stone in there settings for a fee and I'm only assuming that most others will as well, of course you'll have to mail your stone to them, which is done everyday, just make sure your insurance is up to date and insurance the package and you should be fine!
