Will Color I diminish a diamond''s brilliance?

Well it looks like we won''t be purchasing my engagement ring until December-as it is the only time I am in the US to pick it up. But at least it gives me time to really become a diamond expert.


My first technical question: Will -I- (Color) diminish a diamond''s brilliance?
Second: Does SI2 inclusions diminish a diamond''s brilliance? I don''t mind if i can see an inclusion as long as it does not effect the brilliance.



Here is what I have so far:

around 1 Carat Round Brilliant
Cut: Excellent or Ideal polish, symmetry, table and depth, with GIA or AGS
Clarity: SI2
budget: 3.000-4.000USD

My first technical question: Will -I- (Color) diminish a diamond's brilliance? No, a bad cut will, a great cut will make any colour grade look attractive.
Second: Does SI2 inclusions diminish a diamond's brilliance? I don't mind if i can see an inclusion as long as it does not effect the brilliance. Usually not unless it is visibly included and or has grade setting clouds, these can sometimes impact brilliance. If you see the comment clouds not shown, additional clouds not shown then these normally aren't an issue. The time to be wary is if you see ' clarity grade based on additional clouds not shown' or clouds plotted on the diamond clarity map.

Thanks for the comments. See the diamond below, you can zoom in on a picture, it seems to have a lot of inclusions, would this effect the brilliance on this one?

Really no way to tell by images, you need to ask the vendor, make your expectations clear, if you don't want to see any visible inclusions from any angle or distance let them know that so you are both on the same page. It looks like it could be a very nice diamond, JA should be able to supply an Idealscope image for it on request.

In a word, NO

Color does not affect light performance, only cut does. Same goes for clarity, which only affects light performance in the types of unusual situations that Lorelei suggested.

Can't tell what you want to know from an image, but since the inclusions are mostly black inlcusions I doubt they would affect light performance since only clarity grade making clouds seem to affect light return, as Lor said. You can *easily* find eye clean lower clarity diamonds, but you need to ask someone to be your eyes and check it our prior to purchase, which is why a good vendor is so important.
