I'm close to buying a stone I love via a reputable vendor I found in LA thanks to some great threads on PS.

The three people I called all seemed to be pulling or trying to access the same stones. One guy lucked out and snagged three for me to view.

I'm leaning towards a beautiful 1.81 carat Asscher F Color, SI-1 with eye clear feathers that all sit on the outside of stone . GIA # 15676047
A few other dealers want me to call them to verify price so they can try to beat price, so that said whats the general margin % baked in? 10% . Is it a rude to have dealers competing to sell me the stone when the first one invested the time to show and educate me? I'd assume Id given him a second chance to beat on price. Curious how low below price I can offer.

Any thoughts on this stone? Is 2007 GIA report something I should be worried about?

I would try to buy from the one who called in the stone for you. He has time and money invested in the shipping. Are you certain you can't see the inclusions? I would be wary of SI1 in an asscher. You can probably look on virtual lists online and see what other vendors would charge for the stone. I'll look and see if I see anything close to it.

I wouldn't worry about the 2007 date unless it is an indicator that the stone is not eyeclean.

Are you familiar with how to choose a well cut asscher? Because they vary a LOT in cut quality. BlueNile has a 1.80 F SI1 that they label very good at $13,849. No pictures, though, so we don't really know whether it is a good one or not.

Is buy from the guy that pulled the stone for you

thanks, I suppose that is my worry as PS has educated me that an SI-1 on an Asscher is so key. Now I'm no expert per se, but my brother and eye each had the loop in hand and checked it out a bunch. There are two small feathers off to the bottom right that I barely picked up and very small cloud, again, off to the side. he is emailing me the report monday. he also showed me a 1.52 carat stone that was a VS2 and G color and looked great as well. but the lady is all about size and the 1.81 stone was a real darn good looking stone and the F color while not super noticeable, you can see a bit of a difference side by side with the 1.52 stone which was G.

The 1.81 seems to have a very thick girdle...is that an issue? I know cut is so darn key, the smaller stone had a 1.00 ratio and seems to have a wee bit better cut specs.

any help appreciated

Well I think so, the report on the bigger stone seems to suggest its more a very-good to good cut and it was talked up as a excellent cut stone-very good. Im waiting for the report but the GIA check shows some issues I suppose with the girdle being overly thick and symmettry is not the best. I was quoted $13,900 on first mention of price so I think he is in the ballpark .

I'll make sure to post more info as it comes about.

Do you have the diameter measurements of the stone? We can compare it to the BN one to see if it faces up too small because of the girdle.

Yes, it's rude.

He's also invested his resources and even shipping costs. Buy it or not as you wish, and it's certainly possible to beat him up on prices if you want but he/she has gone out of their way for 'free' to help you out and it's rude to take the stone that they helped you find and that they paid to bring in for you and then blow them off after the fact for a few dollars of discount somewhere else.

Table: 61%
Girdle: Very Thick
Culet: None
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Good
Fluorescence: None

I figured to stick with my first guy, I have enjoyed the experience and will make a fair offer in return of his (at least I think it will be).

Yep. Agree with this. For a significant amount of money I would level with him and tell him the discount you are being offered. Otherwise I'd go with him.

SD, are you and your girlfriend sure you want an asccher? I ask because if she is all about size, that is probably the least spready cut she can choose :))

I have a 1ct asscher and it does face up small next to every other cut. A year later and I am already upgrading so DS makes a great point.

Your stone looks very deep so you may be losing spread with the depth as well as with the girdle....

yup, she raves about the Asscher shaped stones. That said, size is the one area she said she'd prefer, although I've learned that the bigger Asschers tend to look the same on a setting than smaller stones. say like a 1.8 to 1.5 carat not a huge difference. Am I right?

Christina, what does losing spread mean? Meaning the face on top appears smaller the deeper the stone? My take was the 1.80 vs. 1.52 was close but the 1.81 was F color and for $2k more, I was leaning on going bigger.

This is an exhausting process! I know she'd be happy with anything but I also know she deserves the best possible stone and I dont feel comfortable buying something unless Im 100% sure!
