A N. Carolina woman has won a 9 million dollar judgment against her husband''s mistress for alienation of affection. I have to say that in all my time divorcing people I only thought the affair was the true cause of the divorce a few times. Usually it''s just a symptom. But there are those cases when a woman just sets her cap for a married man and won''t let go.

What does everyone else think?

Hope the mistress is wealthy - it would be hard to collect a 9 million dollar judgment against most folks!

I don''t think all states still have the alienation of affection laws on the books anymore. While I can understand looking for a financial settlement out of it, suing the mistress makes it look as if it''s all her fault and the husband had nothing to do with it.

Weeeel, I don't disagree with you, but if someone is introduced as his wife and they're still living together, it should be paws OFF. If they're really headed for divorce, he can move out first before hanky panky starts.

ETA: I just watched the ABC video on this before commenting, so I'm basing it on the argument that the wife made about the mistress having full knowledge he was very married, and her point about same house, same room, same bed = hands off.

I'm all for it.

I am so SICK of the Reille's, Michelles, and Joslyn's out there who achieve insta-fame for being homewrecking bimbos. I'm not saying a man is not at fault, or that an affair isn't a symptom of something bigger, but in my opinion, a woman who is fully aware that she is sleeping with another woman's husband deserves whatever is coming to her. It seriously makes me ill that some women have no problem doing that.

the way I see it is the mistress has made no committment to the wife - that was the husband''s choice. So the burden of responsibility not to cheat should fall on the member who''s actually married. Otherwise, are we still subscribing to the idea that female sexuality so dangerous and alluring that men are powerless to resist and cannot help themselves?

I do however, agree that affairs are nearly always a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself

(and don''t hate me - I''m not sympathetic to mistresses - they make me sick as well - just not as much as the actual married cheater does!)

Only about 7 states recognize alienation of affection. And I think wealthy and powerful men are more likely to have a "Rielle" chasing them. The husband is culpable too, but all she can get from him is a divorce and property division.

She might not collect 9 million, but she can make the mistress'' life miserable.

I totally agree.

Agreed. (there was a Lifetime movie about this some years ago -- good movie but I can''t remember the name)

While she is at it, I hope she held out for every last bit of her 50% when she divorced the man.

Weeeeeeeeeell, yes I agree that I don''t have much respect for those women and are sick of them, but...

Temptation is out there everywhere. I love MickeyD''s cheeseburgers (sick, I know) and they keep luring me with ads everywhere. I believe in personal responsibility, so it''s my problem if I eat it, not necessary that they make it.

Yeah, somedays I feel like stoning those women...but we''ve come a long way from stoning and I think that''s a good thing. I don''t think suing is the answer. I think the more traditional way is better...getting her on Jerry Springer and pulling her hair on an on-air bruhaha.

Man I didn''t even know that law existed anywhere... I had to wikipedia it! Definitely seems a bit outdated but it has an interesting premise.
