I just bought an Ering from my soon to be FI and it came with an appraisal from the jeweler that I bough it from. I had the ring immediately insured using that appraisal, but I wanted to get an independent appraisal for three main reasons: to make sure I didn''t get ripped off, everything was as it said it was, and also to make sure I had enough insurance on it.
I took it to an independent appraiser, Sookie Lehman, and she was fantastic! She changed her schedule around to fit mine and was able to squeeze me in while I was in town. She sat down with me for about 45 minutes going over my ring and answered all of my questions.
So why should you get an independent appraisal? Because when I got mine, Sookie found that my side stones were actually E-F, not the G color that I was told they were, and that I needed to update my insurance so that if I ever lost a side stone somehow, I would get an E-F and not a G. With a D center stone, that''s an important distinction, IMO!
I would highly recommend to anyone with a new ring or jewelery purchase to get it appraised by an independent appraiser, even if you completely trust the jeweler you bought it from. You just might find a little mistake like I did that just makes your day!
