I learned a few things today.
N95 masks meet America's CDC and NIOSH standards.
KN95 meets Chinese standards, but not American standards.
Masks with a built in valve allows your exhaled air to exit the mask unfiltered.
So they protect you and make exhaling easier for you, but they do not protect others around you from viruses you exhale.

Wearing a mask that protects you, but nobody else, sounds pretty selfish to me. :nono:
I understand why people like them.
It took me a while to get used to the extra effort required to exhale into a properly (tight) fitting N95 - but I did the work of getting used to it because I care about not just myself; I care about health of others.

Straps that go around your entire head seal better than straps that only go around your ears.

Unfortunately counterfeit N95s masks that do not meet NIOSH and CDC standards are common, so learn how to recognize them.

When shopping, look up the name of the manufacturer and model number on CDC's list:

Thank you for posting this Kenny. I had ordered my parents more masks and am I glad to see they meet the requirements you listed above.

I've worn a K95 since mask mandates became loosened in NY and all the time at school since returning. I've been a close contact MANY times and no COVID so far. I do credit the masks for that.

I‘ve been using kn95 masks for well over a year and a half..When everyone was wearing cloth ones or no masks I wore these. I got many weird looks because people felt that we didn’t need to wear masks after vaccination. I did try n95 masks pre-Covid when I refinished a piece of furniture. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I may try it again…I do like the masks I have. I tie little knots on the ear loops. It makes the mask really tight to my face. I even get a mark on my face after I take it off.

i tired cloth masks a while back and we did not like them, they were superhot
i just wear the surgical masks that work provide, same brand as the box we have in the car

I would wear the N95 if I could, with teaching it's impossible. KN95 has kept me safe so far (along with 3 full dose Moderna).

That’s great @Asscherhalo_lover..I also got the 3 full dose Moderna. I think we got ours around the same time. Are you considering a booster six months since the third dose? Mine would be due in March. I read they are talking about a Omicron variant booster being available next year.

I am open to it since I am so at risk, I will see with what is advised at the time.

We are wearing Airgami masks. They don't fog my glasses or suck in toward my face when I inhale, and are really easy to breathe with. They come in 4 sizes and you can get them with head straps or ear loops.

@MamaBee, I ordered my parents 3M Aura 1870+ N95 Healthcare Particulate Respirator NIOSH approved Face Masks. We have other KN95 masks and N95 masks that I give them but they refuse to wear them so I just keep trying and hopefully I will find something they will use.

Cloth masks never protected anyone from Covid. Omicron or not.
It protects others from you somewhat but not you from others.

In NJ they dont even mandate one has to wear a mask indoors.
Stupid stupid state.

We wear only N95, KN95. KF94 or Air Queen masks.

The critical factor with any mask is make sure it is SNUG against your face. No openings.
I put knots in the ear loops.
But I also have a clip that holds the mask ties together tightly.

Fit is key.
Material is key.
You need both to be adequately protected.
And even then you aren't 100%.
Physically distance.
Get your triple vaccinations.
And wear your masks indoors if you are not at home.

This is the best you can do and it isnt foolproof but do the best you can.

Thank you so much! When the craziness ends tomorrow I will look. Merry Christmas!

With my oxygen/breathing issues the surgical masks is about as far as I can go most days and seals better than the n95/kn95.
The kf94 i can use on a good day but has more leakage than a surgical mask but less than the *95 masks.
The better masks can cause more co2 buildup and lower oxygen levels when they do seal.
The surgical masks I can turn down my continues oxygen setting when wearing one.

Merry Christmas @MamaBee! I hope you had a wonderful day with your family.

Honestly, thanks for this.

I read the article and am gonna change up my masks for better protection.
