I have been researching and checking out my firend''s rocks lately (mostly about 1 carat) and some are so sparkly with many colors, so clear ...i can literally see it sparkle 5 feet away!! my eyes are glued!
this is where i''m confused. my friend''s rock looks white from even just sitting next to her. and her specs are so good too (1c,VS2,G, excellent ideal cut (GIA), i think the fluorescence is slight and it''s set in white gold). I mean it has some color and looks nice up close but even 1 feet away it just looks like a white circle/blob and not "see through"..i dont get it!!
is it the flourescence?

what makes a diamond get that sparkly "see through and not white opaque" look? isn''t it superb cut with very decent color and clarity?

i''m a newbee please educate me!!!!!

Hey H3LP,

Here''s a quick crash course on GoodOldGold:

http://goodoldgold.com/4Cs/Cut/Proportions/

It might just answer some of your questions :)

1. Your friend could be lying about the stats and/or it could be a fake.

2. It's filthy. This is really likely, even a layer of soap can make it look horrible.

3. It's important to note that just because GIA rates it an "excellent" cut doesn't mean it is an "ideal" cut. The GIA range for EX is very wide.

Sounds like the diamond isn't clean. You really need to clean them daily, and keep the hand cream off of them. Most people don't. Diamonds are carbon, and attract carbon-based materials (oils, creams, soaps, etc.) like crazy.

So then to make sure in the future, that I am getting an ideal cut should I make sure all the proportions fall under the right range like shown here http://goodoldgold.com/4Cs/Cut/Proportions/

And to be sure take the numbers and throw it into the HCA tool (under TOOLS above). You want anything 2 or under.

Yes, read the tutorials on PS and the tutorials on GOG - cut is what will truly give the sparkle - gotta get all the angles just right for maximal light reflection/dispersion, etc.

Ditto above thoughts about it being dirty, etc - another thought is perhaps it is clarity enhanced and this is affecting it in some way (or it was given its grade by another lab that perhaps was ''softer'' in grading). In any case, read the tutorials and if you do your homework you are guaranteed to find one that will knock your own socks off!
