A local diamond jeweler told me that all the GIA with .5 ct or larger will have laser inscription with GIA number in the girdle.
I have a 2.02, G, VS2 but not have the laser inscription...why?

thanks,
Legend.

Not all GIA diamonds have the inscription. If the GIA certificate says it''s laser inscribed then it will have it on the girdle.

Size does not determine if a GIA inscription is present. The jeweler is wrong. When you get the diamond graded by GIA you can pay extra to have it inscribed.

Diamonds which have the GIA Diamond Dossier will have a laser inscription as this report does not include a clarity plot, stones which have the usual GIA grading report are not usually inscribed unless requested.

I seem to recall reading that diamonds under 0.9 ct do not have a clarity plot and are identified by an inscription. Can't find this informaiton on their website so I am not sure if it is accurate.

What is the difference between the GIA Diamond Grading Report and the GIA Diamond Dossier?

I would be a little cautious of the jeweler if he didn't know the basics about GIA inscription.

GIA offers two different flavors of reports. The ‘diamond quality report’ is a full size document with a plotting diagram on it and the ‘diamond dossier’ is a half size document that does not. Although they are happy to inscribe any stone that someone is willing to pay them to inscribe, it’s part of the package with the dossier service and it’s not with the DQR. In general you will find the dossier used on smaller stones (the service is slightly less expensive) and the DQR used on larger and/or more expensive stones because people like the plotting diagram and it’s the more ‘traditional’ format. Dossier service is only available for stones below 1.99cts. Many will add the inscription to the larger stones because it’s fairly popular at the moment but it’s not required. If you want it added they will put it on for a modest fee. You can do it directly or you can ask your jeweler to assist in sending it in.

Depending on the date of your GIA report, this service may not have been available when the examination was done. Inscription services have only been available through GIA for 5 years or so.

You can see the differences in the services available and the formats on GIA's website at http://www.gia.edu/lab-reports-services/diamonds/diamond-reports/index.html.
