Why is this OEC so much cheaper?

So, I'm still deciding whether I want an AVR from GOG or an OEC.

Some info: Looking for ~7.5ishmm stone, K color or higher (preferably a GIA J), eye clean SI1 or higher. Budget is approximately $12,000, maybe a tad more but under $15k.

While perusing OWD, I found this http://www.oldworlddiamonds.com/detail.php?ID=2653&SHAPE=EU but I don't really know how to pick and choose with the numbers.
I was wondering why this diamond http://www.oldworlddiamonds.com/detail.php?ID=2378&SHAPE=EU is $5k more. I see the obvious, the VS1 the I color... Is this the only reason?

Is the 1.66 K VS2 a good pick? Since, I'm not very familiar with the numbers I have only been able to choose looking at pictures...

I have yet to email Adam at OWD... that will be my next course of action.

I don't know but the polish on the K is only rated good, so perhaps there are abrasion issues or something else going on there that affects the transparency or the light reflection. Diamonds can have internal graining, too, that can be seen with the naked eye but may not be evident in the photo. Or they can have body tints that are yellow, green, brown, gray, pink, and I don't remember what-all. Some of those tints may be more attractive than others. Inclusions sometimes don't show in the photos, either, but you see them when you look at the actual stone.

Also, I is a relatively narrow band of color range, that is, there's not a lot of difference between a "high I" and a "low I," due to the way that GIA defined "I" grade. K, on the other hand, is a wider band, so you could get a K that's close to being a J, or one that's close to L, and some labs may actually grade it "L." And L would be priced lower than K.

Those are just guesses.

The one is an EGL K VS2 and the other a GIA I VS1. That is simply the price difference between the labs, for one thing. The K VS2 by GIA standards is likely and M SI1 by GIA so that is a big difference.

For what its worth that I VS2 is my ideal facet pattern, it is a truly killer rock. Well worth more information IMO.

Thanks TC1987 and thanks Dreamer.

Dreamer, I know you own a couple of OECs. I've been trying to see one in real life to check out whether I like them or not but haven't been able to. I read somewhere that an OEC is an acquired taste and isn't get everyone. Why is this?

I'm confused... What am I looking at? It's a video comparing h&a to AVR...
Sorry, I already know I don't want a h&a.

I'm not sure I would go so far as to say "acquired taste" but OECs are not perfect in their optics. They usually have some "flaw" to their cut that is evident to someone looking for them. In my experience the most common are leakage under the table or other cut issues that affect the under-table area. Some stones only have the effect if you actively hunt for it, and if you are not one to do that it will never bother you, especially if you have a very well cut speciman. But others are more obvious. The cut has quirks. So if you want a precise and perfectly cut and predictable diamond old cuts may not be for you. No matter how much you love them in photos or love the chunk! *shrug* it is for each person to decide. Even seeing an old cut in person won't help much because each and every one is different.

Hey YayTacori,

I've actually emailed Adam about the 1.66 and he said "The 1.66 K/VS2 is a nice stone but I feel the color is probably closer to L-M under GIA standards. Having that said, it is also priced accordingly with a much stronger discount being that it is EGL. It has a pretty shape and faceting pattern." ...hope he doesnt mind me posting this...!

The price is so appealing though, right?

If I were to find a fantastically cut OEC and compared it to an H&A, do you personally think it holds up on its own?
I personally like the chunkier facets than the splintery look of the RBs.

I've had the pleasure of seeing an AVR IRL... Do they compare?

ETA: The whole reason why I fell in love with OECs was because of Facetfire's. Is her's a one in a million is will I ever be able to find one like her's? I love love the pastel colors it picks up. But then, those are pictures. Do your OECs show chunky colors in real life?
