I am considering buying a diamond or band, or both at GOG, But was wondering why GOG and not just a local jewelery store in my area? If it is GIA graded, what is the difference if I buy it at some local shop or GOG? I was just wondering that.

Thanks

Higher quality.
Lower prices.

So they have better pricing you are saying? Thats what I never understood, everyone is like buy from GOOD OLD GOLD, WHITEFLASH! etc... but if its graded GIA whats the difference where you get it, unless the price for the same GIA rated diamond at a local shop and GOG are much cheaper at GOG.

You have an oportunity to shop around and find out... (if prices are fair..., i really never checked...)
One thing i can vouch for is professionalism...., from their posts that i am reading..., no doubt... they know DIAMONDS...

Unfortunatly, I cant say that about most of the jewelry salespeople that i encountered.

I can honestly say that I am glad that my boyfriend bought my loose stone from GOG. I went shopping locally at many jewelry stores even the popular ones and their stones weren''t as good as what I have from GOG. One store in particular that is really popular didn''t have what I thought as an impressive stone and for price comparison what I have looks is better quality, bigger size, and overall better cut and that was a $3,000 difference. We really lucked out with GOG and I absolutely love my diamond and we are planning on getting our setting done by Whiteflash.

I bought my asscher from GOG and am thrilled with it. Go shop around by all means but the prices will be much more expensive at your local B&M. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Maybe you know this already but what stood out from your post to me was that GoodoldGold picks out their diamonds from the stones measurements as well as the four c''s and also looks at its performance under various technical devices, your jeweller may do the same but most do not go into the technicalities as much. GoodoldGold being an internet seller (as well as a bricks & mortar jeweller) will usually have lower profit margins on their diamonds.

Well if I went to the actual B&M GOG, would I pay more then if I purchase the diamond from there website? Also where can I read more on learning what the dimensions mean.

Thanks everyone, you guys ROCK! (Pun intended)

No, you will pay the same price as online! They can just run their business as both a regular jewelry store but increase profits by selling diamonds online. That''s how they can sell excellent quality diamonds at lower prices. If you go to the Good Old Gold site, read through the 4 C''s tutorial. The great thing is Jonathan, the owner, is just obsessive about searching for and stocking outstanding diamonds, and he will tell you the truth about what is what between the stones you are looking at. He runs several tests on the diamonds he orders (as you can see on the site), plus he can obviously tell you how the diamonds perform visually. I can tell you that he has integrity, and I completely trust buying from him. He has an excellent return and trade-in policy as well on hearts and arrows diamonds. gee, I sort of sound like I work there or something! But I don''t! I promise!!!

P.S. You are doggone lucky if you can actually go there to look at diamonds in person!!!

There''s a thread on Pricescope right now called something like "Found online stone at local store" ... where a jewelry store owner was asking $21K for a diamond the customer then, later that night, found online for 11K. (Same GIA cert # & everything). Does that explain?

Hi InsaneMembrane ~
emrose.gif

I can only tell you from personal experience why I bought from GOG.

Jewelry stores in my area had some GIA or AGS certed stones, mostly non-certed though, many EGL or IGL. There was only one jeweler that actually knew what I was talking about when it came to angels, pavilions, etc... It is really disappointing when I know more than supposed jeweler!
20.gif
It is very agravating that said jewelers state that they can't get that kind of "quality" diamond unless I pay (Out the nose) for the a fee (finders fee) for what I was looking for in a diamond. Said jewelers stated that all diamonds are diamonds, and to be so demanding of specifications was rediculous!
20.gif

The reason why I didn't go w/ that one jeweler that actually knew what I was talking about, well they wanted big $$$ upfront with a we'll see what we can find, and your locked into eventually buying something with us policy!
20.gif

I liked the fact that GOG has great customer service. Everyone I have talked with has been very pleasant and accomodating. I also like that they are very knowledable ... they have been doing this for many years ... they are not affraid to talk diamonds!
9.gif
Go to their site, and you could spend hours learning so much!
emthup.gif

Let's face it ... most Pricescopers get educated and are armed with powerful knowledge
emotion-5.gif
... GOG was not intimidated or offended that I asked alot of questions, and wanted to discuss many different aspects of "the diamond" till I passed out. I have found that they have great patience
12.gif
in the fact that I wanted to question and discuss any given topic ... till I beat it in the ground!
9.gif

Even though I thought I was educated ... GOG was able to clarify, or in my experience ... educate me more! Also, after helping me figure out what was important to me, with my parameters in place, and budget, GOG was willing and able to find a goregous diamond for me! (YAY!)
36.gif

I also don't know very many jewelers who will sell you a diamond that have all the technical equipment that can get me all the reports that I wanted/needed before buying a diamond. I liked all the reports that my diamond comes with, but I really loved having all the detailed magnified black & white
emphoto.gif
's that show any inclusions/personality, and of course the Bscope!
30.gif

I personally think that GOG was able to provide me the most complete information on my diamond. I also found that their prices were far better than what I could have gotten in my state. I also believe through my dealings with them that they have integrity engraved in their hearts and felt that their honesty was a welcome relief.

Knowing and seeing "everything possible" of what I am about to purchase, signifies to me, that they are not out for the hard sell. They are there to "Show" you exactly what you are buying, and educating you in the process. "What would be best for you and your situation." Even though I am on the other side of the country from GOG ... I felt like this was a very personable experience. Every phone call returned and every email ansered with professionalism!

I hope this helps you with your question.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Just make sure to educate yourself about what proportions are ideal. I asked my local jeweler to see some ideal cut round brilliant stones. He presented two to me:
#1 table58% depth 62.8% symmetry/polish vg/vg
#2 table 61.2% depth 62% symmetry/polish g-vg/vg

Both these stones fall out of being ideal cuts just w/ the table. In terms of depth, I prefer about 59.9-61.5%, only b/c I like more of the carat weight to go into making the diamond look bigger. If you check out GOG and whiteflash, most of their stones are ideal cuts. Without going into all the morbid details, for a similar color and clarity, I would have paid ~1500 more to my local jeweler than what''s available from these two vendors. The GIA certificate is just that- you need to know what the #s mean. Just do some thorough research before deciding on this big purchase :)

Thanks everyone for all the great information and details. I appreciate everyones help and time. I guess I''ll head out to GOG next week and look at some stones.... Do I have to first pick a stone online, then tell him the product# or I can just walk into the store and he will show me different stones in my range?

Thanks again everyone!

I would email or call in advance so that they are expecting you. You should tell them the parameters of stones you want to look at. That way they can be ready to help you!

Hey guys, I am thinking about just going to GOG tomorrow afternoon, just stopping in and looking at some diamonds. Is this ok, or I wont get much help because I havent emailed GOG about specific diamonds I am interested in.

Thanks,

Since tomorrow is Saturday a busy day for them best to call ahead and give them the heads up that you''re coming and what you''d like to see when you get there. Appointments are always recommended especially on Saturdays. Have fun, I hear there is a great Pizza place next door if you get hungry, LOL!!!

Hi Insane,

I just happened to catch this thread before shutting down my daughters comp tonight. Feel free to stop in at your convenience. I know we have appointments tomorrow but I know that not all of my diamond staff has appointments all at one time so whoever is free will be able to help you out and please make it a point to introduce yourself to me. If I am not with an appointment I will be happy to assist you. If you are coming to see rounds I have plenty in stock plus a pretty healthy inventory of various square shapes. If you're after a different type of fancy cut you may want to call before coming to see if we have here what you're looking for. We look forward to being of help.

Ms. Darlin Joy...

You are too sweet. If you lived here in NY and I knew we had a position open I woudln't hesitate to take you on. Your words are always seasoned with kindness and grace and you have a special way of making people feel comfortable around you. This comes through in the phone conversations we've had as well and it is a special gift that you have. It is written: "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks ... " and I just want to say you are a prescious soul.
12.gif
I hope to meet you face to face one day.

Kindest regards,

In any case lets see if I can remember what I wrote...

Just caught this thread turning off my daughters comp and hitting the hay.

Hi Insane,

Feel free to stop in anytime tomorrow at your convenience. I know we do have appointments scheduled but not all my diamond staff have appointments all at one time so you will get assistance. Please make it a point to introduce yourself to me when you come too. If I am not with an appointment I'll be happy to assist you myself. If you are looking for rounds we have a good selection here as well as various squares. If its a different shape you may want to call first to see if we have the type of other shape you're looking for. We look forward to being of help.

Dear Ms. Darlin Joy,

You are too sweet. If you lived here in NY and I knew we had a position open I wouldn't hesitate to take you on. Your words are always seasoned with kindness and grace and you have a special gift of making people feel comfortable around you. This not only comes through in your writing but also in the conversations we've had on the phone as well. You would fit in here well.

It is written: "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks ... " and it is evident, at least to me, that your heart is filled with grace. I hope to meet you face to face one day.

Kindest regards,
Jonathan
