Can anyone tell me why cushion cuts only come in "Very Good" cuts as opposed to Ideal/Excellent?
(Or do they come in Ideal and I just cant seem to find any?)
Does this imply that when buying a cushion, it''s not possible to get a cut that is as good as a traditional Ideal round brilliant cut?
Thanks.

You should look on Goodoldgold''s website. Jon is known for his ex/ex cushions.

Are you referring to cut grade or to polish and symmetry grades?

I do not believe that AGS has set the standards for cushion cuts to be cut graded yet, although they seem to be working on many different cuts for their grading system so I do not wish to state this catagorically.

They do come in ex/ex for symmetry and polish, but unfortunately there isn't a mathematical formula that you can apply to a cushion yet to determine if it is a beauty or not. Just too many variations. That is why there isn't anything that is "ideal" because a whole variety of stones can perform beautifully but have wildly different numbers.

You CAN get gorgeously cut cushions and it DOES make a major difference in performance, but you just have to be willing to hunt a bit.

Best thing you can do is just work with an excellent vendor with a rep for great cushion cuts, like Mark at Engagement Rings Direct or Jon at Good Old Gold.

Buying an ideal round is like buying an architectural drawing where buying a cushion is more like choosing an impressionist painting.

I ABSOLUTELY believe that cushions can be as beautiful as ideal rounds ... you just need to choose with your eyes (or photos & video) ... rather than rely on some formula.
