I got this in my email box, and made me tear up:

Out of the mouth of babes.
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog''s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their
little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping
for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family
there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the
euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made
arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the
four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane
might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker''s family
surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last
time that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few
minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept
Belker''s transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker''s death, wondering aloud about
the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who
had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned
me. I''d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good
life, love everybody all the time and always be nice, right?" The
four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so
they don''t have to stay as long."

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

That makes me cry.

I feel sad especially since I saw a very sick dog today, ill from eating the tainted food, and he might not make it. It is awful to think of saying good bye to a beloved pet, but boy kids sure seem to have a clarity about things, don''t they?

That''s so sad. Just yesterday our friends 6 month old golden had to be put to sleep, it had a heart attack. They were away on vacation and my hubby went with the MIL to UPenn''s vet hospital, but nothing could be done to save him. They have a little girl that heartbroken right now. But I told the mom it was probably best that it happened while they were away. Hubby took one look at the doggie and knew he wasn''t going to make it. Just so sad.

Our Sammy was 14, and seemed to be quite healthy. Then in November, his kidneys just failed. We had to put him down. I had just changed his food from dry to cuts with gravy because his teeth were giving him a hard time with the dry. Now, I wonder.

Very sweet story. Maybe it also explains why the good seem to die young. They''ve already learned how to be kind and loving towards others.

Hi everyone, didn''t mean to depress or anything like that. I was raised in a family of people who take in any and all animals who pass our way. We''ve had so many creatures of all kinds die, for no reason we could find. Each time one would go, my dad would tell me that even though they may not be here any longer, we gave them the best possible life, better than they would have outdoors/in a shelter- and for that reason, we must never stop trying to help.

I agree with you, JCJD, my uncle Donnie died at 18 in the 50s, and now, 50-something years later, my dad still runs into people from their school who knew him, and said he was the kindest boy anyone ever knew. And that touches my dad''s heart.
