Why do Europeans prefer gemstones over diamond?

I thought of this question when I saw Penelope Cruz''s engagement ring. Anyone?

There is such diversity in gemstones! There are lovely colored diamonds, but if you venture into the gemstone area of PS, it's truly incredible. Marketing as it is, I don't think Americans know much about gemstones, and if people were more informed, I could bet that many americans would find it an exciting and affordable alternative to overpriced diamonds. I plan to start a nice gemstone collection over my lifetime...

Hopefully it is a love that I can cultivate among others around me too!

I also love large rings, but for some reason I feel self conscious about large diamonds, but not large gemmies!
