Hi,

Up until last Friday platinum was platinum. End of story. But then I had to think; "I wonder what Platinum 950 means?".

I''m trying to buy a wedding band for myself and whereas previously I would have thought - "this one is cheaper than that one; platinum is platinum; therefore all other things being equal - buy the cheaper of the two". Alas, no more!

I''ve narrowed it down to two rings, but one jeweller uses a Copper alloy and the other uses Cobalt. I''ve been trawling the internet and have found lots of information on other Platinum alloys but nothing that compares Copper! The only thing I can say with any certainty is that I now have a new thing to worry about that I was previously happily ignorant of!

Do I even need to care? Any help would be appreciated as I only ever want to buy one wedding band so I need to get it right!

Also, the jeweller that uses Cobalt is approximately ~£150 ($250ish) more expensive... assuming Cobalt is "better" than Copper is it worth that?

Many thanks,
Ashley

Platinum rings are 95% platinum.
The difference in price of the remaining 5% of metal is not very significant.

The price difference of $250 you see between two jewelers probably has nothing to do with that.
We see price differences between vendors for the exact same diamond often.

I'm like you though.
I try to learn so much that I get what they call analyses paralysis.

I remember when buying my first diamond I was obsessing over the size and evenness of those little black triangles in the Idealscope images that they call watermelon seeds.

Honestly for a plain wedding band I wouldn''t worry at all about the alloys. BUT make sure you are comparing apples to apples and the thickness (i.e., how much platinum is used) is the same for both rings.

Ah that''s good to know! I can relax a bit now!

You''re right about the weight - one is heavier than the other - both are 6mm D-Shape in a size R but one is 8.3g @ £464.95 and the other is 10.3g @ £710 (the price difference was even bigger once I specified my size!)

I so know what you mean. My fiancee of a few, yikes now I am saying the word, days, got a goood laugh. The both of us started laughing,
pointing at the other saying, that is you. It really is HIM. Even though I am the one sitting here on the computer trying to learn more about the diamond that we have already purchased but did not bring home yet. We were given some great advice here and I still hope to turn it into some, CASH american style.
So I wish you the best of luck. I hope you get your ring and love it forever, as well as your spouse.

Congratulations,
Shannon and Bob
