Why are "white" synthetic diamonds graded for yellow color?

If synthetic diamonds are Type IIa, which means nearly devoid of nitrogen, and it's the nitrogen that turns diamonds a yellow, then why are 'white' synthetic diamonds graded on a yellow scale? Why would they be yellow at all? What gives 'white' synthetic a yellow tint?
