EGL''s? I was at the mall tonight and wanted to have my finger sized and another ring of mine cleaned and noticed that all the stones they had are EGL and as I was walking through the mall I noticed that almost all the stores have EGL stones. Only one store in my mall had GIA, AGS. I am buying my stone from WF but just wondered if there was a reason for this?

probably looser grading lets them sell EGL stones for what EGL says they are (therefore netting store more money than a GIA/AGS stricter cert); and also probably that EGL stones are cheaper overall, so they probably buy them for less but I bet they don't pass that savings onto the customer!

First thing that comes to mind is that the mall stores rely on the unaware and uneducated consumers. If they can acquire EGL stones that might cost less (to them) when compared to, say, GIA or AGS certed stones, they can still sell them as certed stones, which of course EGL is. Most casual observers and consumers are not educated enough to know what they are looking for, and I think those jewelers in the mall tend to capitalize on that. They retain their markup and great profit margin, typically selling EGL certed stones for more than what you might pay in a GIA or AGS certed stone elsewhere, and the customer is unaware as to the real quality of the stones they are looking at. EGL, as I understand, is not as strict in their grading guidelines. Notice how you might see a stone as SI1/SI2 and I/J?? True GIA clarity and color grading does not teeter-totter. It's one or the other, plain and simple.

I am impressed with EGL in a mall store. Honestly. Must have been one of the better stores.

Often, you are lucky to get EGL. Some chains tend to utilize other, lesser known grading labs, and some places even have thier own "grading lab" in-house with some Three-Letter-Acronym that sounds impressive. In other words they print thier own paper and it's worth it's weight in, well, paper.

Good morning all,
Please when identifying the Lab as EGL, you should further identify which EGL lab.
Israel and in that case the date of the report,
EGL in Los Angeles and the date of the report,
EGL USA
EGL N.Y.
EGL Antwerp

These are very important distinctions.

All EGL's were not the same.

Uncle Marty of course

That is true Uncle Marty. But EGL Certed diamonds, regardless of the location, do trade at a discount compared to AGS and GIA Certed diamonds.

Wholesalers know their business. If a diamond can get a decent grade, and thereby bring a higher price, the wholesaler will submit the stone to GIA or AGS. If the diamond is a lesser make and quality, the wholesaler submits to a lesser lab. Why pay the higher Cert fee to receive a poor AGS or GIA grade when a lower fee charged by a lesser lab will give the diamond validation to an unwitting buyer.
