Who will trade a non-certified diamond?

Just looking for suggestions please - I am hopeful of an upgrade one day soon, but my diamond is not anything special. All I know about it is that it is officially .66 but faces up .75 (I do have exact measurements but they probably don''t matter at this point), approx 4.9mm x 4.8mm and G/H in colour, oh, princess cut. It is apparently of "good cut" in modern terms.

I''ve been searching on a few websites, but it would be great to know who I should be looking at that might actually do a trade for me?

I don''t know of anyone who would accept it in trade regrettably, you could try consignment if you aren''t in a rush to sell.

Lots of dealers will buy an existing diamond, whether or not you have lab paperwork. The trick is establishing the price. Chances are good that you paid a fair amount more for it than they will be willing to give you. The details will depend on exactly what you have and, to an extent, how hard a bargain you drive on the new one. If they get to mark up the new one by a few thousand dollars it’s easy to offer a generous tradein and if they're already close to the wire on the new purchase you can expect them to be tougher on the one they're buying. It’s rather like the game with automobile tradein programs. You are not going to find a dealer who will give you back what you paid without a MAJOR offset somewhere else and you will not find a dealer who is going to put much credibility on either the grading or value conclusion in your appraisal unless they are otherwise familiar with the appraiser and count them as a trustworthy source. Most are not.

Love - where are you located? I recently upgraded my Leo ering to an H&A at a local B&M. My former stone (the Leo) had an IGI report and I had the original sales receipt. Our SA allowed us to trade the diamond for one of theirs. Of course, we only got about half of what we initially paid for that, but we were aware that that would happen.

It doesn''t hurt to call around to some of your local jewelers and see what they can do for you. I was actually surprised that we were able to go that route since I initially planned on just resetting my Leo.

We do, but to be very honest I do not sell many stones that are not cut to Infinity quality, it just is not my passion or my niche.

My offer to trade in will be based on what it will yield when recut to those standards and what we believe the quality of the diamond is now, minus my cost to recut the diamond. Thus my offer will be very low compared to what you paid. I know this is not the answer you are looking to hear, but at least you now know one jeweler who will trade for an uncertified diamond.

Have you concidered keeping the diamond you have and wearing it as a pendant?

Thanks everyone, I''m actually in Melbourne Australia so between shipping etc it might be easier for me to look somewhere local. Wink, thanks for your offer - this one actually used to be in a pendant I had made, and when it was taken out to put into my ER at the time (we''d just bought a house) my husband bought me a new pendant to replace it a year later. The fact is, I''m just being a bit greedy! I will go down this path sometime, I was just hoping to get a bit of a feel for how much I might be able to get for it so that as I look for replacement stones I can factor that in.
