My stone is with BGD right now. I thought I saw a chip under a loupe and flipped out, but Brian says that it's a feather. The stone is still with Brian. I'd love to have a report on it. How do I go about that? Will it need to be sent back to me first to send out again?

I believe most older stones have EGL certs so I would think there ?????

Since it's with Brian right now, I'd ask him which lab he thinks it should be sent to.

I would send it to GIA. Much more accurate than EGL and if you ever need or want to sell it, makes a different.

Ask Brian. He should be able to help you with any one of the major labs.

GIA takes weeks the last I heard. I wouldn't want to send my stone away for that long. Honestly, I wouldn't worry with a lab report unless you plan to sell the stone later. I imagine OEC's get sent to EGL a lot because the cut grading systems of GIA and AGS may be brutal to some of the old cut stones. That is just a guess, though.

You don't really need a report unless you want one for your own fun and information or if you plan to sell.

GIA is the best standard, but the problem is that most OECs do not have GIA reports so comparitive pricing is difficult/impossible. GIA also has a nasty habit of calling OECs "round brilliants" and giving them a fair cut grade :nono: though that is not as much of an issue if you get one of their reports with no cut grading I suppose. The mislabeling would still be icky. AGS is fast and they will likely label your stone correctly. They have a type of report that basically names the cut, color, and clarity, and that could be a good option.

I got an EGL report on my OEC for a few reasons. It was cheap, I could do it in person because I live near one of their labs, and it took all of one hour. Also, as an old cut, it makes comps easy. And I figure poor as EGL can be, it is likely better than any of the appraisers I have locally ;))

I'm back to trying to make a pair of earrings. When I made my current OEC earrings I over bought and then sold a few stones as I'd rejected them for matches. These are larger, and more expensive stones so I figure a report will not only help me for selling any stones I reject, as well as match any stones that I decide to keep - I discovered the first time I was hugely picky about table size in 1/3 carat stones. At least it's a harmless form of OCD!

GIA isn't kind to old stones. EGL is considered to be loose in their grading. I just want it all, is that too much to ask?
I'll ask someone at BGD what they think.

My understanding is that the choice lab for certifying a vintage cut stone, such as yours, is EGL USA. Reason is they have much more experience with OECs and OMCs than the other labs. There was a thread a while ago that discussed this at length. I'll see if I can find it.

I've asked and Brian can have it sent to GIA for me.

I feel very indecisive. I'm not sure I want GIA. EGL may be a bit loose but I like the idea of being named as an OEC or whatever it is rather than a poorly cut RB. Ideas?

I bought one with GIA grading and they called it an Old European Brilliant.
