who serves the best hot dogs in your area?

do you have a favorite (store bought) brand of hot dogs? what do you put on your hot dogs?

We get all of our hot dogs from the local butcher because we're red-meat free now -- chicken and turkey dogs only. I really love the ones that are infused with chili. My only topping of choice is ketchup. And plenty of it.

I usually buy Hebrew Nation, there's a hot dog place that serves Nathan's as well that is really good. And Steak n Shake has a damn good one too. I like a good chili cheese dog. Otherwise just a little ketchup and mustard.

NO ONE! If there are good hot dogs in my area, I've yet to find them. I hear they have some good hot dog options at the ball park, but I rarely make it to the ball game and haven't had a chance to try them yet. Plus I rather suspect their dogs aren't grilled, which is the only way to prepare hot dogs IMHO.

But all is not lost... Berkeley and TOP DOG are a just down the road. OK, so I haven't actually made the two hour trip just to go to Top Dog, but it's on the to-do list every time I do make it to Berkeley!

There's a great local place called Naughty Dogs but I've only ever tried their Chicago style veggie dog. (It's a soy dog with all the Chicago-style fixin's including a steamed bun.) They use Smart Dog brand veggie dogs, which are ok but I like the Yves brand much better.

No one around here. There is only one cafe I would even consider eating at. They are pretty expensive but they can be because the have absolutely no competition and they don't serve hot dogs.

Try the brands I mentioned above from your local supermarket. I find them in weird places, not with the frozen vegetarian substitutions, but usually by the vegan cheese/tofu/etc. Most major ball parks I've been to serve them steamed in the bun, wrapped in foil. You have to steam them at home or grill them really briefly so they don't dry out. Since they aren't meat, you don't have to cook them at a very high temp. I don't eat them often (only when I'm craving the awesome condiments I like to use) but DH will go through them like mad if left to his own devices because he has the vegetarian palate of a 5 year old, god love him.

Los Angeles' ghetto dogs are THE BEST. There are random street vendors, sometimes in carts and sometimes just in a beat up old shopping cart with a random tin pan over fire.. selling hot dogs wrapped in bacon, that have been cooking for who knows how long. It's covered in every condiment possible: mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, relish, salsa, guacamole sometimes.. NOM!!! And the best part? A HUGE PILE of sliced grilled onions and bell peppers that have also been cooking for forever.

My friends and I used to take the bus from our city after high school, down to Downtown Los Angeles, just to get some ghetto dogs. It would be dark by the time we'd be able to catch a bus back home!!

Funny story. The majority of the vendors are selling illegally without permits, but most of the time cops don't mind if they don't cause trouble. But one day, I was in Hollywood at a club and I was just craving a ghetto dog. I went outside and found a vendor, and had one made. Not 10 seconds after he handed it to me, someone walked towards him and grabbed him. All the other street vendors and him ALL BOOKED IT OUT OF THERE! They left all their materials behind! I was so confused. 30 seconds later, VROOM, a police car parks right in front of me, and more police on bicycles arrive and take over all the vendors' stations. I feel a little bit like a bad girl, living on the dangerous side of life, whenever I buy one of these dogs. Okay, I'm seriously drooling thinking about them.

LOL! When I get a steamed or boiled "regular" hot dog (like from one of the local stands, which are apparently nothing like Madelise's East L.A. stands!) I smother it with ketchup, AND mustard, AND relish. I know, sacrilege!

When I get one of those great grilled Top Dog however, it's just spicy mustard and lots and lots of sauerkraut. YUM! It's a good thing they're not open right now!

No. I have to make mine at home b/c all the commercial ones can't do it right plus they use cheap weiners. And sponge-bread cheap crappy buns, too. LOL

What goes on mine is the West Virginia recipe:
Ballpark all-beef hog dog, grilled
ketchup, mustard
a bit-nippy hot dog chili sauce
chopped or diced onions
top it off with a sweet coleslaw, not too soupy

Try it. Y'all will like it.

I refuse to eat a hot dog without ketchup! In fact, the only reason I still eat soy dogs after giving up meat is because I freaking love the condiments, especially the ketchup. Southern IN doesn't have an issue with ketchup, thankfully.

I love chili and slaw on my hot dogs (with mustard and onions). In WV my favorite dogs are from Sam's (with spicy chili).
