Who cuts diamonds like this? Could it be recut?

So, browsing through GIA certificates - as one does - I came across these two crazy stones. Of course they're a disaster on the HCA and probably look a bit dreadful in person, but I was wondering, could one take a chance on their potentially promising clarity plots (for SI2s) and recut the table to be a little higher, lose some spread, some weight, etc, but end up with something pretty? This is more an intellectual exercise than anything, because I think the cost isn't really comparable to a well-cut stone 0.25ct (or more!) lighter. Are there any logical parameters within which buying a stone that needs recutting makes sense? And I'll be the first to admit I don't have any experience or wisdom here - just plenty of curiosity. These two just had such peculiar dimensions!

Well, the recut I had done was originally a stone that bad (or worse probably), and it lost 20% of it's weight being recut. The pavilion might need to be recut on these as well as the crown. The minimum cost to recut was $350 when mine was done, so you'd have to compare the price of the stones plus the recut charge and what it would cost to buy a GIA excellent stone that is 20% smaller.

You lose a lot of diameter/surface area this way, not worth it. A better geometry to recut is a deep pavilion, you lose little surface area.

Wow - VERY cool thread about your recut! I have to say, looking at the Sarin I would've thought pre-recut things would've been limping along pretty badly, but actually it was quite a lovely stone in its (asymmetric, random) way! Nothing to compare with BGD's recut, though. :D I'm surprised to see how much weight it lost given the recut plan looks only a wee bit different than the original stone - I guess when you spread it out all around the girdle things add up.
