I have an inherited diamond that is an L or M color. It is in a yellow gold setting that I don''t like and that does not fit me properly. I would like to get the diamond reset into something I would actually wear, but I am not sure what color gold to get. I tend to prefer white metals, but I worry that white gold would make the diamond look more yellow. Opinions?

Congrats on your inheritance! If it is well cut it will still face up white, but ivory-ish white rather than icy white. I''d just embrace the color if I were you, maybe set it in yellow gold prongs to bring out the warmth but retaining white gold for shank. But that''s me.

ditto... i have a K round brillant, and I'm getting it set in yellow prongs I actually like the warmth. But there are plenty of pricescoper that has k and lower in platinum or white prongs, if you are ok with the antique white look of the diamond

Hi kindred!

I agree with D, if you like the colour it will look more of an antique white as I call them rather than ICY WHITE

. There are various ways you can set it, I have an L colour with yellow gold shank and WG head/ prongs, or you could go all white gold - some say WG complements a lower colour stone well as the WG has a very slight slight warm tone and therefore doesn''t make the body colour contrast as much...If you prefer white metals then that is what I would go with.

HI Kindred- what shape is your diamond?

HI Kindred- what shape is your diamond?

It is round but it is not a great cut. It faces up small for its size. It's something like 2.4 carats and looks more like 2 carats.

ETA: Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I''d say go with white gold, in that case.
A fancy shape, such as a cushion, will actually pick up a lot more color from the yellow gold setting.
I''d say that there''s a good chance the white gold will make your stone appear "whiter".
If we hold it next to an "F" color, the tint will be obvious- but my feeling is that the white metal will enhance the whiteness of a "soft white" round diamond.

Best of luck!!

I think it depends on your objective. If you''re trying to make it look more white, I would use white gold. If you''re trying to bring out the subtle yellow tint, then go with yellow.

Also, the diamond may (or may not) be a candidate for a recut, since you mention that it''s not well-cut. You might want to consider sending it to one of our favorite cutters before you reset it. This would certainly help it look more white if that''s your goal.

I would like the diamond to look more white. jstarfireb, Your question about possibly re-cutting it actually leads me to many more questions about appraisals and insurance, so I think I will start a new thread for that.

Meanwhile, if anyone else has any more advice about choosing white or yellow gold, I''d love to hear it.

My H&A K is set with an 18K yellow gold shank with a 18K white gold head. My stone shows some warmth from the side view but faces up very white.

The more I think about it, the more I am intrigued by this idea. I wonder if it would look intentional or if people would look at the tinge and see it as an ugly or "bad" diamond. I wish there was some way to know in advance what it would look like.

I started a new thread here on the subject of re-cutting this stone.

Hi Kindred,

I think you should simply take the diamond to a jewelry store and find out what you prefer when it sets in white or yellow gold. I have a J/K .70 RB that I placed in yellow gold because I believed it would hide it''s color. But since then it has been reset in a white gold antique reproduction ring and I get tons of compliments when I wear it. It shows the color more when in the WG setting, but still looks great. So as always it is a matter of preference.

Regards,
Lisa

That''s a good idea!

I am partial to white gold jewelry, so I am going to say white. If you like white more, than go with something that you will get more use out of and actually like. If you are still unsure, I agree that you should hold it up to both yellow and white and just see what looks better to you.
