Question for all you jewelery lovers. I am having a 5 stone diamond (1.50 tcw.) anniversary ring made, in a trellis design. The jeweler who is making the ring wants me to upgrade the metal from white gold to platinum, he said that the quality of the diamonds is very high and that the gold will not do the diamonds justice, the price jump is extreme, from a $575.00 setting to at $1,800.00 setting, does the price sound right to you and is there that much of a difference in look. Thanks for you thoughts.

I disagree that white gold would not do diamonds justice. But it is a matter of whether you want to have white gold periodically replated with rhodium or have platinum polished since it will get scratched and turn gray. I consider it a toss up, except the platinum price you were quoted seems a little high compared to the wg cost. I could buy into double the cost, but that quote is more than triple.

I''m having the same thing done now and have been shopping for mountings for the last few weeks. That gold price is really low, even for 14K. That platinum price is the going rate right now.

Platinum is a different color than white gold. It really depends on whether you''ll appreciate the upgrade or not.

White gold would be fine and I agree that it is a huge price jump. Although I personally prefer platinum, the additional cost of platinum these days is becoming too much to afford it. WG does just fine and it will do you ring justice just fine!

I''d love to see pics of the ring by the way when it''s done!!!

I think that you will do just fine with WG, and it will look just as beautiful as the platinum. Price aside, it all boils down to preference...there are those who love platinum and there are those who love white gold (and there are those who love both, lol). Wow, that is a huge difference!

A 1.5ct five stone! I can not wait for pictures of the final product!!

With that being said I would pick plat., but thats just me. I have just had less trouble with my plat. settings. If you can''t spring for the plat, I wouldn''t worry about it. White gold is still going to be beautiful.

Congrats on your project!

I wear platinum but only because of a bad reaction to WG.
If i didn''t have an allergy, I''d prefer it because of the color and lightness. I don''t exactly like how heavy platinum is nor how it gets gray.
I also think that WG compliments diamonds very nicely.

I would personally prefer platinum for a ring. I don''t like the maintence of the white gold, and am very finicky about the "warm" color. Of course it can be replated, but its not feasible for the rings sake to have it rhodium plated as often as I would like. To get the rhodium to "stick" properly the ring must be perfectly polished out, and white gold is polished by removing layers of metal. My platinum gets a little dull every six monthes of so, but then I get it shined right back up, with almost no loss of material.

The cost of platinum is very high right now, but it is worth it to me. You just have to decide what is best for you.

White gold and platinum side by side in new condition will equally flatter white diamonds. I do agree, when that rhodium starts to wear off the and warm color shows through, this is less flattering to white diamonds. Not any less flattering nescessarily to diamonds with some noticable body color (low near colorless range).

Good luck deciding!

Thanks for all your opinions, we decided to go with the white gold, the price difference is just too great. I will post pictures of my ring when it is done, I saw the stones today and they are gorgeoous he found me 5 matching (1.67tcw) F, SI1 they are real sparklers! Dinsky
