I have a 14k white gold ring that I''m trying to get an exact copy made of. They told me the gold from the original ring cant be re-used for the new ring or for a non-ring project. Something about characteristics of the gold becoming unstable... I cant remember. My two questions. 1) Is it true that I cant reuse the gold for a ring OR anything else (a pendant or something)? 2) Is it kosher to ask a jeweler if they''ll credit the value of the old gold toward the new ring they make?? (I''ve read that gold CAN be reused if it''s re-refined but thats not practical on a small scale so trade-ins would go to a BIG stack actually worth re-refining)??? Any help appreciated, Thanks!!

Grace, I think I have read on here that jeweler''s normally don''t reuse wg or platinum in making a ring. Truthfully, an old 14K setting doesn''t have much value in terms of the gold. I doubt they''d give you more than a few dollars for it if they were buying it for scrap.

I''d keep the original piece and just pay for a new one. You won''t get much for it on trade in or credit for scrap, and most places won''t re-use the gold for the reasons mentioned.

I agree that you probably won''t get much for the setting. When I was picking my setting out of a catalogue the jeweler had I believe I saw that his cost on my 4 prong wg tiffany style setting was about $19. He''s not going to give you much if he can get a new one for so little.

Thanks everyone, I just wanted to know if I should even pursue trying to do something with the gold so it looks like probably not

I did like the sentimental idea of using this little bit of history to make something new, but oh,well...
