Hey all,

I''m getting a custom made channel set ring with a 4 prong head. My question is 18K gold head going to be ok, or should i pay the extra $150 for a platinum head. The diamond is a RB 0.912.

Thanks,

Shaun

I paid extra for platinum prongs. Gold is more brittle than platinum and if you caught a prong on something it would be more likely to snap off completely. Platinum would bend so you are less likely to lose your diamond.

I am paying the same for insurance ($0 deductible) whether it has platinum prongs or not, so I elected to pass.

On a related note, does anyone know whether the solder joint between the WG and platinum is less secure than solid WG prongs that were cast as one piece with the ring? It would be interesting if any solid data exists as to whether Platinum prongs soldered to a WG setting really is more secure??

I guess I would prefer to keep my diamond safe, the idea that I can replace it doesn''t mean I won''t protect the diamond that I have grown attached to.

It's up to personal preference, however I do usually prefer white metals prongs. My ering is yellow gold band with plat prongs, as I think *sometimes* yellow gold prongs can look a little cheap and IMO make the stone look smaller.

However! That said, Cleo has a gorgeous solitaire setting with yellow prongs (4 prong I believe). It's really one of the nicest solitaire settings I have seen (I obviously love ygold!!), and very beautiful. I have also seen some settings with yellow prongs that look not so hot.

So bascially, after all that rambling, I would say go for white metals prongs unless you are sure that your GF would particularly like ygold prongs. I will try and link you to some threads as examples.

I'd pay the extra for the platinum head. Platinum prongs bend instead of break and they are easier to maintain. Despite the fact that you are getting insurance, it's great to have peace of mind. The color difference won't be very noticeable, but you can rhodium plate the entire anyways and then you won't notice it at all.

ETA: are you getting an 18k *yellow* gold setting or *white gold*? If you are going with yellow gold, then nevermind my rhodium comment.

My ring is plat head with 18kt white gold shank and from my understanding, plat bends so when the prongs take a hit the plat will still hold the diamond securely. However, I was told be my jeweller that if 18 kt prongs is used, the diamond may pop out from the prongs when it takes a hit...

Just my 2 cents...

Sorry the ring is going to be 18K white gold.
