Hi, everyone.

I'm planning a senior/graduation trip for the end of this school year and I have a son who is done with Destin/Mexico/Caribbean and wants mountains and prefers to leave the US.

Iceland is still on our list of possibilities, but what I think I have settled on is flying into Seattle and renting a car and driving over the border to Whistler in July.

Has anyone been there in the summer?

The drive is 5 hours, but it seems like a nice route. I hate flying (HATE) and I hate united and american airlines. I have had good luck with jet blue (no routes apparently) and southwest. Southwest gets me to SEA. I was thinking 1-2 days in SEA then drive to whistler for 5 days, back 1 day to SEA and then back home. 7-8 days total.

Any opinions? Advice?

Thanks. I'm more of a cruiser (he doesnt want alaska cruise) and a RVer.

I love Whistler ANYTIME of year! Ride the lift, shop, eat/drink, BEAUTIFUL!

We were in Vancouver and took a tour of Whistler, picked up at our hotel and driven to the resort. Short and pretty drive from downtown Vancouver to the resort, stops along the way for coffee, waterfalls, etc.

HI:

My sister lives in Vancouver and was recently in Whistler for a week holiday. They had the best time--it really is a gorgeous part of the universe.

cheers--Sharon

Ok, great! I originally was thinking Seattle because I always wanted to go there, but now I'm thinking just fly into vancouver. Surely there is a whistler shuttle or something....

Whistler is beautiful year round. Actually all of BC in that area is beautiful. The drive from Seattle would be quite pretty, as would the drive from Vancouver to Whistler. And if you are feeling adventurous, the drive through the pass to Jasper, Banff, and Lake Louise is worth it (Banff, which is the furthest out, is about a 9 hour drive from Vancouver, so you'd want to book a hotel in one of the towns and make it a couple day trip). It's a much shorter drive from Calgary - so many people fly into Calgary and rent a car to do Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise. (Whistler is nice; the Banff/Jasper area has glaciers and gorgeous national parks tucked into the mountains, resort towns, and Lake Louise has a beautiful lake for canoeing in, walking trails, and a beautiful old 1900's era rail station hotel that would be fantastic to stay at, but also has good restaurants for lunch if you are doing a day trip).

Thank you so much.

I had to look Whistler up as I had never heard of it! When I was in college I drove up the Pacific Coast Highway (I am not sure that is its name) in a convertible with two female friends from northern California to Vancouver, enjoying every part of the trip. I did not see Whistler, however. It looks beautiful.

HI:

Canada's 150th BD has brought the world to our Provincial Parks. I would check that there is accommodation....as I understand rooms have been fully committed....we were in Banff during the August long weekend and I've lived here all my life and have NEVER seen it that busy. My sister said Whistler was bustling. (then again, I think there was a Iron man competitions going on....)

PS If you have 5 days, fly into Vancouver and spend it all at Whistler.

Great happy hour here! :)

I haven't read the other responses, but why not fly into Vancouver then rent a car to drive to Whistler?

I love Whistler all year. Skiing in winter, of course, but in the no snow period, there is great mountain biking -- take the lift up and barrel down the mountain. But my most favorite thing to do in that area, and highly recommended if your son is at all adventurous, is rock climbing in Squamish.

Squamish granite is sticky as heck; you feel like Spiderman smearing and jamming up bare rock (the grand wall via apron strings or cruel shoes is a fun way to suffer). There are great multi-pitch routes that beginners can do with a guide (most climbs are trad so you need someone who knows how to put in protection). You get awesome exposure (if you like that kind of thing). I highly recommend doing a long multi-pitch climb all the way up the Chief then hiking down.

Sharon, good point! The free National Park admissions and the Canada 150 celebration specials have made it crazy everywhere.

I have never looked at the Whistler resorts. They look fabulous! I am definitely going to put that on my 'to go' list for retirement. Looks like it would be a great vacation any time of year!

Whitewave, what about flying Alaskan airlines? They usually get pretty good reviews.

Ok. HIlton whistler is BOOKED all summer already!!! We have a bazillion points so I wanted to use them, but they are even booked already for paying customers.

So we are now booked in April for spring break. Used points.

I'm so excited!

Question: should I buy plane tickets now or wait? While I have flown often before, I have not flown in a while now so I lost track of industry tips and tricks.

Sorry, I haven't read all of the other posts, so forgive me if I have repeated what others have said.
Whislter is great in the summer, but it will be cool. Lots of outdoor adventure things to do and the Peak to Peak was an amazing experience. Vancouver would definitely be on the list to visit (not a far drive from Whislter) and Lake Louise was unbelievably beautiful. Seriously the photos do not even begin to capture how stunning it is with the mountains and glacier reflecting in the lake and several hiking trails.

Sounds like it will be a great trip, enjoy!

I am very execited. Son would like to bring a friend or two, so we are waiting for someone else to commit before I buy plane tickets.

Ditto on Whistler any time! The Four Seasons up there is perfect (a Four Seasons anywhere is perfect, aahhhhh :P2).

I should add, Vancouver is amazing too. My hubs and I have been there a gazillion times. Such a cool, friendly, livable city.

Ok to update, we are two moms and two sons who are going and I am the only one not skiing (I am pain averse lol, have asthma, etc. shopping and sight seeing are perfect for me).

The hotel is reserved, we all bought business class tickets (why not/special splurge) into Vancouver and I just booked him two days of ski school/lift tickets/equipment and clothing. The other mom and son are proficient skiers and snow boarders.

This is all going down in April! I'm really excited. This son is cute-- wanted to know if Whistler will be like Gatlinburg :mrgreen2:.... I said, "Son, just you wait..." :appl:

He has to get his passport photo retaken because he went and got it while he had the flu, so he looks swarthy, red eyes and with an expression like, "I Kill you..." :naughty::rodent:

His twin sister and I are going on a cruise at the end of May to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

DH and I are going to Corvette driving school in 6 weeks in the desert outside Las Vegas.

I'm going to be busy--- gotta get back in shape too-- been sick too long. I have to turn this thing around so I start back up with a trainer on Tuesday-- haven't been in 2 years.

Gotta shake it all up...
