I'm new to fancy yellow diamonds and cushion cut. It's for myself as a right hand ring, so I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Choice 1: (GIA 2013 cert, more details given)

Shape: Cushion Modified Brilliant
Meas: 6.39 x 5.77 x 3.68
carat weight: 1.13
color: Natural, fancy intense yellow, Even
Clarity : SI2
Depth: 63.7%
Table : 59%
Girdle: Med to Thk, F
Culet: None
Polish: Very good
Symmetry: Very good
Fluorescence: Faint

Choice 2: (GIA cert done in 2011, so not much details, no clarity grading) I would think its also SI2...

Shape: Cushion Modified Brilliant
Meas: 7.04 x 6.84 x 5.11 mm
carat weight: 2.02
color: Natural, fancy light yellow, Even

Choice 1 is smaller at 1.13, but it's a Fancy intense yellow and seems brighter and more lively.
Choice 2 is 2.02 ct, fancy light yellow and seems 'duller'. Major plus point is the size.

Price difference is USD 1150... Which would you pick?

The top stone is the 1.13 FIY and the bottom one is the 2.02 ct FLY

If pick the moe lively one. You'll get used to the size of either eventually and once that happens you dont want to be stuck with a "dull" diamond.

Eta: plus, personally. For fy diamonds, the more saturated the better.

I'm a fan of the color of the "duller" one (personal preference) but I would never pick a dull one.

Edit - it's really hard to tell anything from that picture. You would need more up close pictures or better yet
a video.

Edit again - and unfortunately, grading reports or numbers on fancy cut colored stones dont tell us anything.

More information on the 2.02 ct

They are just more pleasing to my eye and usually* brighter stones. I know I am the exception though. Of course you have to get
the color you like best and that you prefer to look at!

How do you plan on setting it? Any melee around it? Halo?

I'm thinking of setting it like this, for my right index finger. This stone in the ring has about the same dimensions as the 1.13ct stone

The smaller one is the 1.13 FIY and the larger more squarish one is the 2.02 FLY, pictures not taken too well

What is your priority? Colour or size?
What do you mean by "dull"?

it seems the FIY gives more fire (i'm not sure if that's the right word to use) n it's brighter n more brilliant, while the FLY seems not so 'firey'. I'm not sure if it's due to the 1.13 having a better cut or just due to the saturation and intensity of the yellow color, which gives it a feeling that it's more sparkly. (pardon my limited vocabulary to describe a diamond).

A 2 ct cushion is nice to have for its size, but i'm not so thrilled with the lighter color n less sparkly appearance...
It's a dilemma.. I would usually prefer size, but I don't want to compromise on the cut as well. This is more of a 'fun' ring for me as it will be worn on the right hand.. I still intend to wear my 3.29ct RB triple ex solitaire that I bought from diamondnut on my left ring finger... so i'm thinking if I can get away with a less beautiful but bigger diamond for my fun ring, or should I still go for the nicer but smaller diamond, n set it with a double halo to make it 'pop'...

Just wanting to hear from anyone what they think or if anyone has a yellow diamond which they feel could go down in color for a larger size? or would prefer a smaller but more intense yellow color on the diamond...
Thanks!

does anyone also know whether there is a huge difference when set in a yellow gold basket, between a fancy light vs fancy intense yellow diamond... cos I've also heard that you can enhance the color of the fancy light yellow by setting it in a yellow gold basket and it will look more like an intense...?

Does it have to be between these two ? I saw Leibish is having a sale. And maybe you can find a large one with better color or cut?

Both FCDs have different facet patterning. The FIY is a crushed iced type which gives a busy pinpoint type of sparkle whereas the FLY has larger facet patterning for bigger bolder (but slower and less frequent) type of sparkle. I agree that having stronger colouration could also make the mind/eye think it is brighter. I love colour so I am biased towards having stronger saturation.

Probably another reason my likes tend towards the bigger one...I like to see some symmetry in my faceting patterns. I'm not a crushed
ice fan. I think I'm not about "in your face" color. I'm more for subtle color. Just seems richer to me. Some times the darker stones
just seem to suck in the color and dont let it out. Of course this is all dependent on the way each stone is cut/looks. But, alas,
this ring isn't about me :cheeky: . You've got to figure out what you like and why you like it.

If you did a bigger stone would you set it in the same setting?

BTW...I've only seen a limited number of colored diamonds in person so take my opinion for what its worth! :?

I like the shape of the second diamond better, so I am partial to it. That said, if you don't love either one, can you continue to look? Or if you do love them both, what does your gut say?

I would choose color over size, but that's just a personal preference and in general, I'm not a fan of light yellows.

Just a fyi: GIA was producing full Colored Diamond Grading Reports in 2011; there is a sample 2009 one, which includes a clarity grade & other grading info, on GIA's web site.

What's showing up, however, under that report number is simply a Colored Diamond Identification & Origin Report. Who knows whether that choice was made merely to save money -- GIA charges less for these than for a Colored Diamond Grading Report, and regardless of which service you choose, there is a price jump at, e.g., the 2-carat mark -- or because the vendor was concerned as to how the stone would fare under more expansive scrutiny.

Hi Everyone!
As a general rule, any stone with a color origin report needs to be closely examined.
Years ago ( like 2001) a FLY 2 ct diamond was a lot less costly than it is today relative to 2ct J color diamond for example.
So a 1/2 report was less of an issue for buyers, and the extra $100 for the report made more of a difference in the price, percentage wise.
Today, a 2ct FLY is a costly stone, so having the full GIA report seems like a very smart idea.
The exception would be where the price is well below the cost of a fully graded stone, and the seller explaining why the stone was sent for a partial report.
Here's some of the reasons dealers and cutters submit such a stone for a color only report:
*) clarity issues
*) fluorescence issues
*) cut issues
