So, I am having a dilema. I can''t decide what I would rather have:
1) a bigger diamond, around 2ct with a lower color grade I, with a simple setting
OR
2) a smaller diamond, 1.5-1.6, with a higher color grade G, with a more custom setting

The diamond will be RB and superideal cut. Please let me know your opinion/advice/comments!!!

Thanks

bigger diamond, I or J color, superideal cut, SI clarity, in a super simple solitaire setting with a scoopy head.

settings wear out and look cr#p in about 5 - 10 years - get the bigger rock.
settings also go out of style.

second the bigger diamond. you can always upgrade the setting someday!

I''d definitely go for the bigger diamond, simple setting.
I''m admittedly size obsessed!

well, I guess I''d go with the 1.5 G, cause that''s what I just did

. I had a plain solitaire for 5 years though and I have to have a more elaborate setting so I was willing to get a smaller stone to get what I could afford. I''d say if you love the classic solitaire, go for the bigger stone

Personally I''d go with the bigger diamond, lower color and simple setting. I really like simple settings. If you ever want to change the setting it''s not as big a deal. If you pay a lot for the setting initially and then down the road you want something different, I think it would be harder to do, but maybe that''s just me.

Also if you''re not color sensitive why buy a higher color diamond? I could be wrong but I would bet most people can tell a diference in size better than they can tell a diference in color. When I see ladies'' e-rings where I work all I can tell from a quick glance is how big the stone is, not it''s color. I would not know the color unless they actually told me.

Ultimately, you should choose what you want. You''ll be the one looking at it the most. What do you want to see when you look down at your finger? Good luck with your search.

I''d go for a 1.6 - 1.8 G or H with blue fluorescense in a simple setting. I am very color sensitive and could not go past H, and would prefer not to go past F without blue fluor. If you have compared a G and an I in person and don''t notice much difference, then go for the I if size is important to you.

if i was in your shoes.

the biggest top ideal cut G-H VS2-SI1 stone within your budget.

DancingFire,

Why do you stop at H and not go down to I? If it is truly ideal cut, won''t it face up white?

a well cut stone will face up whiter but it just depends on people''s eye sensitivity to color. not everyone is sensitive but some people swear they can see a difference between a G and an I or an F and a H etc. from the side view is most likely where you will see any color...i don''t really see any color face down in my J but from the side i can see it sometimes. it just depends on lighting and the size of the stone etc. but for me i don''t mind a bit of color as i know that is what i compromised on to get size. and that is what was important to me. so it just depends on preferences! there IS a color difference between a D and a F and a G and an I. but how people VIEW color is different and some don''t see it as much as others etc.

you may need to see and compare some ideal cut stones in person to get an idea of your threshold for color. i had a G then an H then a J and now another J...i loved them all and i don''t mind going lower for larger!

We can all tell you what we think, but the bottom line is that this is a very personal decision. My own experience is that sacrificing color for size was not ultimately the best idea. I went from an ideal cut 1.5 G to an ideal cut 2.35 I. The size difference was huge, but over time, I started to notice that in certain lighting conditions, the I color stone did look a bit tinted from the side. It's always faced up super white -- that was never a problem. If I could do it over again, I would have gone for a smaller increase in size while still keeping the overall color/clarity the same as my original stone since I knew a G color was more than white enough for me. If I were in your shoes, I would get the biggest, best cut stone available in the G-H range. But, again, everyone perceives color differently, so what might be yellow to one person is icy white to another. Some people might even say that a G color looks tinted. Best bet is to see a variety of well cut stones in a range of colors.

that just me.there''re no wrong color choice. my wife has 2 solitaire rings, one I and one H color. can i see the difference? yes!!. does the I color sticks out like a sore thumb next to an H color? no!!

I would go with the 1.5-1.6 ct G, but I am color sensitive. If you aren''t...go with the bigger I!

"Why do you stop at H and not go down to I? If it is truly ideal cut, won''t it face up white?"

its a matter of opinion, to me I began to see yellow in stones at I (H appears clear to me) and definitely in J. Other people have different opinions so let your eyes be the judge, not someone else''s vision.

I''d keep looking for an H 1.8 carat wit some blue fluor. and balance the cost/ setting-- I''m color sensitive though. BUT if I had to choose I''d pick the bigger I-- but I''m make sure it had Med Blue fluor get a simple setting... and change the setting later. Before I made that decision however... I would go and look at a few I''s in person.... and if I liked Bezel settings... I''d get it bezel set so the warmth from the side view wouldn''t bug me-- which it would.

I was in the same shoes as you were almost 1 yr ago when we picked out my diamond. I opted for a higher color/clarity/cut over size. I am very color sensitive, plus we were purchasing a EC, which is a cut that lets it all hang out, so I really felt like I did not have much of a choice, But, I am very happy with my decision, I love my stone!

I side more for the color over the size, but then again I think I am more color sensitive. Plus, I believe in a larger stone, the color becomes even more evident. Again, a very personal choice like others have stated.

If people know the answer to your question, they will respond. They don''t ignore questions from new members just for the sake of ignoring them. Give people some time. If they don''t answer, they don''t have an answer, it''s as simple as that.

It''s also not nice to hijack someone''s thread to direct people and their attention over to yours.

That said, welcome to PS. A little patience and understanding go a long way here!

I''d go with the 1.5-1.6 G..... I''m color sensitive as well. I have a 1.5 F VS2........

I would go for the bigger stone.

To me, it''s the setting that drives the choice.

If I''m going to sit the diamond up in a simple solitaire that allows viewing from all angle, I need the higher color to be happy with it.

If I were going to put the diamond in a setting where face-up is the only way you really see it, then, I can go lower.

So a halo setting, or bezel setting- or even a three stone ring where all you see is wall-to-wall bling, I can go with the lower color.
