A jewelry ''set'' consisting (possibly) of diamond studs, a diamond solitaire necklace, and a ring of some sort (perhaps a stacker?)
-or-
a nicer watch, i.e. Rolex, Cartier, etc.

My FI has told me that his family would like to get me a wedding gift, and the jewelry set is what is considered the traditional gift, although nobody''s really sure anymore because it''s been so long since our families came to the US! The diamonds would all be purchased through a friend of FI''s parents, which, being a PS-er now, has me kinda worried...

But, I''ve been dying for some diamond studs, and a new stacker right away would be fun!

On the other hand, my parents are planning on getting FI a watch, and I thought it''d just be simpler if we exchanged watches. And of course, there''s the utility of the watch - I don''t have one now, and it''d definitely be handy!

At the end of the day, I just want FI''s parents to get what they want to get, whether that''s the set, a watch, or a box of cracker jacks

(I''d also like to choose the least expensive of the choices) But FI says they just want to get me something I want.

So tell me PS''ers...which would you rather have?

I''d probably choose the watch, given that I like to choose my own diamonds.

You could always get the diamond items seperately over anniversaries, etc...

What a nice dilemma

I''d go for the watch, too. It''s something you know you''ll make good use of, since you don''t have one already, and you can choose your own diamond pieces later

I''d choose the watch as well.

Watch, definitely. I have an Omega Constellation and have never regretted choosing it

I''d go for the watch...

Watch for me as well.

The set. For sure. I am not into watches. I wear them, but really dont care who makes it or any of that. They all keep time. As long as it looks ok I don''t care. I would never spend more than $100 on a watch when I can get one for $60 that tells me the time just as well as the expensive one.

Now, a lovely set of stud earrings, a new pendant and perhaps a ring is something I can get on board with. I know that doesn''t make any sense seeing how the diamonds do not "do" anything, but thats just me.

Definitely the jewelry set! I'm not really into watches ... I like to have a decent one to wear every day, but I wouldn't want one worth more than $500 probably

eta: I just said what I would personally do, as a non-watch lover, but if I were in your shoes I would probably go with the watch.

Watches are redundant. Every cell phone has a clock.

I would go for jewelry and would love a sapphire or emerald RHR.

I would go for the watch.

100% agreed. When I need to know the time, I check my phone.

Also, I do not like jewelry on my wrist and a watch would bug me. I''d take a diamond set.

Have fun deciding!

I don''t like watches and never have. They are uncomfortable and I still haven''t found one that doesn''t leave me with a rash of some sort. (material doesn''t matter -- they all get me)

Since I NEVER wear a watch, I''d go with the jewelry set. Even if the diamonds they pick aren''t the greatest, you can still wear them out and almost no one will know. They may not be the best diamonds you own but there are times when having something other than your best might be nice.

Could you point them to White Flash or something without them being offended? Maybe FI could pass on your preference and happen to mention that he knows you love the piece you bought from them.

i''m not much a watch wearing girl, so i''d pick diamonds :]

Thank you for all of your thoughts! It really helps since I''d be really happy either way, although I think in my mind the watch makes more sense? I''m very new to diamond ownership though, so what do I really know

It''s the sentiment behind it that makes me really excited and happy

upgrade - O yes, sparklies for anniversaries sounds nice!!

yssie - omg, I know, right?
21.gif
More diamonds later...I like the way PS''ers think!

mrssalvo - I have been wanting a watch for a while now..

shertz1981 - Ooh, I''m gonna have to check out Omega''s also!

Kaleigh & junebug17 & Lorelei - The watch seems to be in the lead here

radiantquest - I guess the question is, would I wear the set enough to do them justice? I''m a grad student, constantly in jeans and sneakers...hmm..

elrohwen - I hear ya! Sometimes I just wanna say ''Neither! Use the money to take a nice vacation instead!'' Then everyone wins!

Although I guess that might come off sounding rude. Oy.

purrfectpear - This is true. Although, I think a sapphire or emerald RHR would just look silly on me, I don''t think I could pull either of those off!

MC - Thanks! And thanks for helping me decide
21.gif

SanDiegoLady - I think my biggest concern would be that FI''s wouldn''t get the best for their money, yanno? They are super generous, so so great to me
4.gif

TooPatient - That would be the best solution huh? But I think that might be a little too pushy in this instance..

coatimundi - Thank ya kindly! It was either the dress or the overalls in your av (so cute!!)...but I didn''t think you''d wanna lend them to me

jcrow - Maybe once I get more used to wearing diamonds my mind will be made up for sure?

I''d much rather have the jewelry set. I love watches on other people but not on me. I just use my cell phone when I need to know the time.

Watch. I rather have one thing to represent my wedding. Nice parents!!!

If I was buying for myself, I would choose the set first, before buying a really nice watch. (I already bought the studs and pendant and will do the watch sometime in the future.) However, I would not want someone else choosing diamonds for me from a family friend. If someone else is buying, it is much safer to say I like the following 3 watch models.

I would rather have the set. That''s something I could pass onto future kids one day. I think the watch would likely break eventually (even if it''s 10 or 20 years later). I think jewelry lasts a lot longer than watches do.

Though I would love a jewelry set (who wouldn''t want killer studs?), I think I would choose a the nice watch. You can build your own jewelry set down the line.

How generous of your fiances parents.
If I were you I would go with the watch, a watch like an omega or cartier is a beautiful thing and will last for years. You could give them a list of models that you like and they could choose something that you know you will all like , if diamonds are the tradition on his family you could include some with diamonds on the dial, eg the omega constellation for that price.
I would be worried that if someone of my parents generation chose jewellry for me that their tastes could be very different to mine, and that would be a terrible waste. \

Diamond quality can vary but a Cartier Tank Francaise is universal. I say go for the watch!

Initially I''d say the set, but.. what if you dont care for the diamonds? In having said that, I''d go for the watch.. I''d much prefer to pick my own diamonds for studs/pendant/etc.. You have very generous in laws!! How lovely!

Stole the wors right out of my mouth....errr, well out of my mind before I typed them.

I''d take a Rolex any old day of the week!

Thanks again for weighing in everyone!

Tacori E-ring - Eeexcellent point! And yah, they are awesome

Circe - OMG that''s so absolutely my first choice!! I wish I hadn''t looked up the price online, now I feel terrible asking for it
23.gif
I saw that it''s sold on Amazon.com - is that legit? Sounds so bizarre..

Dancing Fire - HA! No was man
25.gif

PinkAsscher678 - That''s what I thought too, but very recently I had several people tell me very vehemently never to get one, they said the kinetic movement thing was so annoying and they never had the right time on their watches! But I''d never really heard anyone complain about that before...
33.gif

I''d go for the watch and choose my own diamonds along the way :)

Oh, thank you! She made an excellent flower girl.

You really can''t go wrong. I just am the "rather have one great gift than several nice gifts" kinda gal.
