I am a diamond novice considering 2 different stones. I was wondering what people thought about each and which they would recommend. Specifically, would Diamond B be noticibly larger than Diamond A, and/or would Diamond A be of noticibly better quality than Diamond B? Which do you think is a better value? Thanks for the advice!

Diamond A $11000
1.36 G VS1
Depth 61.6
Table 56
Girdle Medium
Cutlet none
Polish Exc
Symm Exc
Fluor none
Crown Angle 35
Pavilion Angle 40.8
Cut Grade Exc

Diamond B $12000
1.53 G VS2
Depth 61.9
Table 57
Girdle Medium
Cutlet none
Polish Exc
Symm Exc
Fluor none
Crown Angle 35.5
Pavilion Angle 41.2
Cut Grade Exc

Yes, the size difference will be somewhat noticable. After thinking that I then took a look at the angles and my first thoughts were...hmmm...I am not sure about those angles. They are outside of the regions that I was willing to accept after my study, and so I went ahead and plugged it into the HCA just to make sure before I commented and it came back as 3goods with an HCA score of 4.4. I don't know what the other one scores but just looking at it I am sure it is under a 2.0 and probably closer to a 1. Given that, and my understanding of angles, I would not hesitate to completely walk past the second stone without ever thinking about it again.

That being said, I wonder if you hvae done enough research yet to really commit to one or two diamonds yet? I think you might want to read up a little more about cut, and about GIA excellent cuts, here on pricescope and various other places before making a commitment on such a significant purchase.

for an understanding of HCA scores go to the tools section located at the top of the page. Here is where I plugged in your numbers on stone 2HCA "thingy"

Welcome to PS. Also ditto WH4, with the info given, the first is the better cut. The second is what we call a steep deep with the crown and pavillion angles and it may look dark and leak light as a result, an Idealscope image would be useful to confirm, also it scored fairly dismally on the HCA, possibly aided by the steep pavillion angle. I would pass on the second diamond and see about an Idealscope image for the first if you want to learn more about this diamond.

Great advice .....pass on the 2nd stone.

Great advice .....pass on the 2nd stone.

Ditto that. I won''t want a bigger "dead" stone. Perhaps dropping to an eyeclean SI1 or SI2 and H colour (unless you''re colour sensitive like me!) will help you get a bigger ideal cut stone.
