Which setting for 3.5+ AVR?

diamondseeker

I've been following your AVR thread closely, too. I have my AVC on consignment, but I'm getting a little tired of the waiting game and started to consider to just order one soon. We recently had 10 year anniversary, and not having my ER really make me sad, you know? Anyways, seems like I'm looking at 3.5carat range with J VS2. I like the warm color for AVR, and I always felt a little off with my D AVC. I like old style cut in warmer color than crisp D.

I do agree with you, U113 looks great with AVR too....maybe not so with other Vatche setting(1st pic) I picked, since it looks more contemporary. I can enjoy simple setting first, and once DSS sits in, then I can go for more ornate design?? :Up_to_something:

I have seen the 2620 with a 2 or 2.5 ct center and it is amazing  way better than with a smaller stone. They adjust the proportions for larger stone settings and it is perfect in every way. I strongly recommend asking GOG to see it, it's the 2620 RD LG P.

That is the one with the pave on band, right? I think those are $5K range, and I want to spend about $3K to $4K....

Which setting is this? I really love that head!

I'd also strongly consider Mark Morrell. Petite Torchiere?

Another vote for the Swan.

When you say the 2620 is super popular, are you referring to folks here on PS or in the general public? I've seen several of them here - none in real life. I wouldn't hesitate to consider that setting - I think it would be beautiful with an AVR!

Not just on PS...Google it and you get over 5k Google images. Granted, some of those aren't hand shots...but, it's very popular. They showcase two different size diamonds at the store, a .50 and a 1 ct. I think the setting is better suited for a "smaller" diamond because of its delicate style.

Ditto and you would probably NEVER run into anyone with the Tacori 2620...very popular on GOG and PS but very small % in all the USA. I love that setting if you want a cushion shaped halo which is beautiful!

I tried on this setting at a local jeweler...it was made for a 9mm stone. I wear a 5 1/4 and the knife edge paved shank was lovely....thin and yet strong. It is a solitaire with some bling and would look great with an AVR. What is the diameter of your 3.5c?

This one is more simple and less expensive:

How did you get a 3.5 c AVR??? They have never had one listed. Did they have it custom cut for you? Lucky girl! I'm so excited for you and can't wait to see your honker 3.5.

That 1st setting is absolutely beautiful!! LOVE IT!! I wonder if they make it in plat?

wintotty:
They do make it in platinum I'm sure. GOG carries them (and their prices are even better than the site listed from my experience).

I couldn't find that *exact* style despite going though page by page but I did find a few similar and they were about 2800.00 or so in platinum. Here are the ones I found (one the profile IMO is way to busy but blown up pictures are usually unflattering to stuff like that).

Just email Marie with the link/style number to the one you want and ask for a quote in platinum for the AVR you bought from them. I think that'd be an amazing combo!!

Yes, they make them both in platinum...and that setting is SOOO lovely. It was perfect as I really want a large J color AVR or OEC too. I didn't want to spend $4-7k on a setting. (The 18k white gold in the store was $1800) It reminded me of one of the fancy Tacori solitaires that I love but the Amavida/Gabriel prices are more reasonable.

I wanted a very thin micro-paved shank and the knife edge paved shank gives that look. Was glad they had one of these so I could see it in person and try it on. It is stunning. Glad you like it too.

I thought you already had your 3.5 AVR.

ariel,

No, I don't have AVR yet..... Jon is going to cut it for me when I'm ready.

So I've never seen Gabriel & Co rings, I don't know how their quality is......since you've seen then in person, could I ask how do they compare? I like the weight of the platinum, so I want to feel the weight when I wear the ER. I don't want the rings that are feather light. Are they delicate? I'm not going to compare it to the custom made rings like LM, VC, or SK....but do you think Gabriel & Co rings are as good as Tacori? I do like the pricing and design, but I'm a little worried because a lot of times what you get is what you pay, you know? :wink2:

I totally understand about missing an e-ring. I went awhile with my other diamond on consignment and since there were no AVR's even close to what I wanted, I just bought another RB! That was a mistake because I should have just waited for an AVR. My first stone did sell, and now I am still waiting for an AVR!

Have you seen a J AVR? Because after seeing both AVR's and AVC's, I can handle a lower color in AVC's than AVR's. I couldn't do AGS J in an AVR. The I color AVR I had to look at was visibly tinted compared to my G stone which is really white. I felt like I needed H color, but if he doesn't get one with the right specs, I might get an I color one. I could do J or even lower in an AVC, though.

Sure, it never hurts to put a diamond in a simple setting especially when you aren't sure what you want! I agonize SO much over settings whereas I really know what I like in diamonds!

Jon sent me the 2carat J AVR for me to see a while ago, and I didn't mind the color at all! I think I'm not color sensitive at all, and also my previous diamond (EGL graded) was I color so it probably was really J or K, and it was Radiant shape so it must've really shown the tint...but I wasn't really bothered by it. (this was pre-pricescope days, so I had NO clue on diamonds :nono: )

With my D AVC with Strong Blue Flor, the local jeweler thought the diamond was fake, I think because he's never seen the diamond cut like AVC, and also it was SO white.....I know some people think if the diamond is so white it is CZ, you know? I was quite offended by it, but as much as I love the AVC, I just wished it has more character to it....like warmer color to the stone. I know if I had MRB or EC, I would be ecstatic to own a 3 carat D color stones, but I just really felt it was missing something in D AVC.

So is Jon hunting the rough for you to cut AVR in your spec? Are you going to do VC setting? To me it is really hard to decide on the setting when I really can't see the real thing....I can go look at Tacori settings, but no one around here carry Vatche, Bev K or Gabriel & Co. So I really don't know how well they are made... which makes me more worried about deciding on a setting.

Love #2 and #3!

Oh, good. Well as long as you have seen one, then that's great! I also see what you mean about the D color AVC. I agree that antique cuts lend themselves to colors below the colorless range.

Jon has some stones with my specs already coming in from the cutter. Just waiting for them to return from AGS!

I don't know yet what I will do about settings. I wish I could buy an AVC to put in that Van C setting because I almost want a more simple setting for my round. In order to do that, I'd have to sell the MRB I now have in the Vatche setting, which means wasting an almost new setting unless I found an AVR the exact right size to go in the Vatche. Bottom line is that I really don't know what to do!!!

Here is my take on the brands you have mentioned.

Vatche: great quality for simple, elegant settings. You pay a little extra for the brand, but it is worth it if they have what you want. I'd use the U-113 for a Tiffany repro as well as their 3 stone setting which would also be similar to Tiffany's. They have other classic settings with side baguettes and pears as well. I do like the Vatche Grace and think it is one of the nicer Legacy style settings. I have seen these in person (and own the U-113).

Tacori: Some gorgeous antique designs, nice quality, but really overpriced in my opinion. In most cases, I would choose a design and have someone like Victor or Singlestone make something similar. They aren't cheap, but Victor's work is pretty perfect from what I have seen.

Beverley K...beautiful designs, well priced for what they are, but I might rather have handmade and spend a little more. Again, I'd probably use Victor. But they are great for people who want antique settings without the handmade price tag.

Gabriel and Co.: They also have some great designs, and this is the other company I recommend to the shoppers here who have budgets that don't allow custom, handmade settings. I mentally put them a slight notch behind BK. But I have only seen their little stacking bands in person.

After the setting you had on your AVC, I do not see you being happy with any of the above unless you want to start out with a Vatche U-113.

See that's what I am afraid of..... after LM ring I didn't think other settings by BK, G&C, or Tacori will make me happy. I'm leaning heavily toward the U-113, this way I can play up with the bands if I get bored with it.

I'm very excited to see if Jon will have the AVR in your spec in soon! Can't wait to hear about that! Van C rings are all gorgeous, I'm tempted by it! Unfortunately GOG doesn't carry the Van C so it is out!

I totally understand. There are many advantages to getting the setting through GOG. I am hoping to hear any day now, so I'll let you know!

Hi Wintotty!

I have a 3.40 L AVR and looked at the Tacori setting you have listed as your choice #2, just a couple of weeks ago. I expected to like it but I actually loved it! In the picture it looks as though the stone is set super high but it really doesn't look that way irl. Marie said it would be about 3500 for my stone in platinum.

There's a thread somewhere with pictures of an AVR in this setting... I'll see if I can find it.

If you had a LM setting you won't be happy with any of the other options. Gabriel settings are very delicate and sparkly and I really liked the one I tried on....WAY better than the Tacori 2620 and the Tiffany Legacy. But they are not hand made. Perhaps you can try SingleStone or JBEG for a setting because they an upgrade from "stock" type settings. BK may be an option but I'm not familiar with how those settings are made.

This particular Tacori 2515 belongs to kathleenmv and it's in Acrossley's thread "Help me decide! New rings... torn between two styles!".

I am glad we get a glimpse of you every now and then. :)) But we need to see those diamonds in SETTINGS!!!!

I had forgotten you have an L. I need to go back and look at that.

$3500 does not sound bad for Tacori.

I know it's time those diamonds were in settings! Isn't that tiresome?! I got sidetracked by another project but it's a very happy one. And the AVR will be set within the next few months.

Ahh, I know! It's so helpful to see other people's completed projects, isn't it?!

I really liked this setting and no, I didn't think it was too light. I've had a lot of time to think about it and I will either get my AVR set in this setting or something "similar" to Dreamer D's.

You should ask Marie to send you the Tacori sample so you can see it in person.
