Hey everybody--

I have 3 settings that I am considering. 2 are set designs, but I think that I would have to have the last one custom made... but I''m on a limited budget so I don''t know how that one would end up costing.

Oh, and my girlfriend is a nurse so I am looking at things that are latex glove friendly. In other words, something that''s not too much like a solitaire where it could protrude or penetrate a glove.

I want to get something a little bit more special (on a slightly limited budget) so that''s why I going with a surprise setting as opposed to something that is too bling-bling... ifyouknowwhatisayin.

What do other nurses have for settings? Anyways, here are the 3 options:

OPTION 1
Vatche Plat Comfort fit with Surprise

OPTION 2
LE Plat with Surprise

OPTION 3 (custom)
Vatche X-Prong Solitaire Ring (but picture it with a tiny surprise diamond custom set in it)

Thanks,
Greg

Latex gloves... don't love high settings (like No2) and are somewhat reluctant about prongs (as all have). Are you sure your girl is going to wear the ring while doing such work? It is NOT safe to get those gloves punctured, actully, it could be VERY dangerous - depending on what she handles at the time.

The third setting is the lowest - so the most confortable. For highly active wear there is nothing like a good ol' bezel - even half one! Are those really bad for you?

Also, you may want to inspect the settings at whiteflash - so if the third is the ultimate favorite after all, it may be eaier to skip the "custom" part if Whiteflash has their simmilar design in suitable sizes.

I could only access the first one, but I can picture what the 3rd one looks like. With a surprise diamond, I'd like the first over the third.

I like #1.

Hi, I'm a nurse and just got a high set diamond with .70 side baguettes.
The setting should not matter as nurses (in the hospital setting) are NOT allowed to wear rings while working other than a plain wedding band. We are also not allowed to have fake fingernails or natural nails that are long.
All of the settings you have chosen are beautiful.

She was planning on wearing it while working... many of her engaged work friends do and haven't had too many problems. We both work together and I know what it's like having gloves punctured... I've been poked by a biopsy needle and have tested negative for all blood tests since.

She doesn't care for the bezel look and I think that more light can get into the diamond if it is held on with prongs.

Thanks for the input thought!

TO Shappy:

The nurses at the hospital that Sara and I work at has the NO LEE PRESS-ON NAIL RULE, but does not have the ring rule. I hope they don't impose that anytime soon, although it would on protect the patient and nurse.

How big is the diamond you've picked out? I like ring two and think this would look most elegant with a stone under one carat. For a larger stone, ring three would look fabulous!

Be sure to post a picture of the final product

I'm in California and just got done with our JACHO survey--that is Joint Commission survey for hospital accreditation - and that was one issue that came up (we scored an unbelievable 100%). It's not just safety from puncturing the glove, it's also because it's not possible to wash hands effectively from patient to patient wearing a ring with nooks and crannies- theoretically you can transmit disease from patient to patient. I also scrub for the O.R. sometimes.
Aside from that, if your hospital tells you "no" on the ring, would you be disappointed that you chose a setting you didn't really like thinking it would be "ok" for the hospital?

Greg,

I like option 1 the best. What are the specs on the diamond (size mostly)??

And, congratulations!

I like # 1 the best. #3 looks too "squat" to me. However, it doesn't really matter what I like. What matters is what she likes. I'm surprised that she would want to wear her ring under her gloves and while washing her hands all day. I hate wearing gloves with my rings, or washing my hands with my rings on.

If you want the name, Vatche is the way to go. LE offers great quality. I have one of the LE settings and it was well crafted.

To add more to your confusion,..... Since you are checking out White Flash, you might want to take a look at the White Flash Design rings. There are a couple "surprise" style in the new WF designs.

Hey everyone, just curious what it means to have a "surprise setting/diamond"? I think I like number 3 the best if going for a lower setting. Have fun picking one out!

TO Shappy:

I'll have to check with the JACHO thing. They came through the hospital in Nov/Dec. I don't deal with direct patient care--I'm an architect--but I'm sure that you are correct.

By the way, did your whole hospital score a 100% or just your particular pcu. I've never heard of an entire hospital with that high of a score.

Thanks again.

A surprise setting is when you have two little tiny diamonds under the main diamond. You can kind of see it in the pictures. It's a poor man's 3-stone setting

Whole hospital scored 100% Trust me, there was a tremendous amount of work and anxiety that went into that!

This is mostly true for those not-so-well cut stones. Actually, I strongly believe that the rather poor optics of most diamonds out there was the main reason why such high rings got in fashion, despite being uncomfortable and risky for the stones... If you and your girl like the high setting, no problem, but the diamond will not benefit from this extra exposure unless it is not well cut.

There is some mention of this on the tutorial page on ring settings ((in the paragraph about the bezel type), just FYU.

I agree that a high setting isn't a good idea in your situation. If you don't like bezels, there are a number of more "open" setting options. Here are a couple of examples of E-rings for women that worked with thier hands a lot. The first could look really trick with small flush mounted side stones, as well, the second with "surprise" diamonds. There are plenty of other low-slung designs out there to choose from that would work much better than a traditional prong set piece.

i personally LOVE the x-prong, but i do like the idea of surprise diamonds! maybe you should check out the settings in a b&m..

If you guys like the X-prong, and like surprise diamonds, then why not just get someone to make you an X-prong with surprise diamonds? This seems like the easiest and cheapest and most direct route. Custom doesn't necessarily mean more expensive anymore.

I just checked out your Vatche link and I have to say the prices are actually really good considering how popular the name is. I am sure they can modify the setting in the way you desire, and if not there are a dozen others that make pretty much the same ring that will.

My two unasked for cents on the hospital/glove thing....why bother to take a risk of being punctured while working with blood or tissue etc just to wear an engagement ring? Surely your health and LIFE is more important than just wearing the ring while working? You note her friends have not had 'too many problems' while wearing e-rings..is it worth it? Bad things CAN happen. Minimize the risks.

I would get a setting you both really love...and forget about wearing it at work.

Oh and check out Scott Kay for surprise diamond settings, they have a few.

I second Mara's opinion. Why take the risk?

I've read some posts by doctors and nurses (on this site somewhere, I think) who take off their ring and pin it to their brastrap before putting on gloves. That sounds like a good plan, to me--after all, nobody's going to see your ring underneath that latex glove anyway, right?

Yeah, that works well if you only have to take your ring off once or twice a day for gloves, but for those who don/doff gloves all day long, the ring factor becomes more an issue. My center stone is a 2.22 sapphire, with side diamonds. I stopped wearing my engagement ring. It was that or go up a size in gloves, for which I would have lost sensitivity of touch with the loose, baggy gloves. Consider the setting carefully in light of which field of nursing she is in. That being said, many OB nurses I know just leave their rings on 24/7. I don't get it, but they do. Maybe I'm a little OCD about germs, but the nooks and crannies sure can hold a bunch......

I would take the ring off for work (or at least while donning gloves if that is just an ocasional thing) if I was her, in which case you could get whatever setting you want.

Griffin -- I love the second ring you posted, the one with the slight swirl. Is that a true tension setting? Who makes the ring and where can I find it?

Thanks, Kay. Glad you liked the ring.

It was originally designed as a true tension setting in Platinum for a 1 carat stone. A hidden bridge could be added for strength so it could also be produced in gold.

As for the designer, that would be me. It was actually one of my first designs professionally.

As for where to get one, I never sold that particular design to the client - they licensed lighter, less costly designs instead. I have always thought of remastering that style for the right store as it really was stunning with the proper stone.

If I still have the molds I could make one for you.

Thanks for all your input. I just placed an order for the first one... which was the one that I had been drooling over for the last half a year.

I can't believe I just purchased this with the diamond I mentioned. Usually I'd call up my girlfriend if I did something this huge, but I think that might ruin the surprise. I don't think it will really hit me until I pick the thing up at FedEx and see it... that will be 3 weeks away. With Valentine's Day coming, Vatche is backed up on settings so it will take a while. In the mean time, I somehow have to hide my overwhelming excitement!!!

Thanks again,
Greg

PS: Yeah, I'll post it once I get it.
