My gf has her heart set on a princess surrounded by pears.. here are two different ones I came across (thanks to some friends from PS!).

Which do you like better and why? I realize this is a personal choice, but since I''m not her and my taste sucks, I''m looking to see what the ''general consensus'' says. Btw.. my gf has tastes in the ''cute but still want to be unique'' range.. for whatever that means.

The center stone will be a princess cut around 1 ct, likely H or I in color.

btw. I''ll probably have the final setting custom made in white gold to save some money.. Or if I go with the JA, and the jeweler can''t come close to the price, I might buy it directly from JA.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts/opinions.

Wow, the setting for the center stone on that JA one is sky high. Might pose problems as far as practicality goes. If your GF works with her hands much it could pose lots of problems.

Can''t tell much about the Tiffany''s one from the one pic. In general I like their settings - usually very classic - but be aware you can''t buy a setting by itself from there. You MUST buy the ring as a package, and they will only use their own stones.

you may want to try visiting a local jeweler and tell them what you''re looking for. They''ll have catalogs with lots of options. Also, there are lots of recommendations around here for custom work from www.whiteflash.com, and you can probably find a great diamond from them as well.

The Tiffany looks more appealing...because of course it is a Tiffany...but the scale of stone size is way off on the JA ring.

Look at the Tiffany you will notice the pears are much smaller and don't suffocate the center stone. There is a delicate balance and if you cross over you have ruined the look. This is really not a fair comparision...the JA example has what appears to be an artifical stone for the center, the color doesn't match the sides and as I said the sides are way off in scale. In this particular comparision, I bet you will be hard pressed to find a JA vote. Kaleigh has that Tiffany ring...it is hands down spectacular. End of sentence.

I am confused...she wants a princess and you are showing the brilliant cut for opinion. Have you decided to go with the round?

The round in the example was only oversight on my behalf. I didn''t realize you can change the center stone to princess.

In any case, I also thought the JA stuck out alittle much and the tiffany didnt stick out enough, creating more of a ''bow tie'' effect. My gf is a nurse, so she likely wouldnt wear ANY either diamond ring on a daily basis.. probably when she had the day off and when we go out. And although she denies it, I have a feeling she is looking for alittle bling factor so she can show off to her friends.

There is also setting at BN similar to the JA, except with smaller side stones over
here.

On further consideration, i might go with a smaller stone, more like .85ct. Do you think the 1/4 might be a good complement to .85? My concern is that the 1/4 tcw would be too little for a possible upgrade (maybe 1.5ct?) in the (distant) future?

The head of the setting will be made to fit a certain size range. You probably won''t be able to get a .85 setting to acomodate a 1.5ct stone. Talk to a jeweler about this. Maybe the head could be changed later. But then the side stones would be out of proportion...

If you''re planning to upgrade go with a diamond vendor that does upgrades. That takes care of the diamond part of upgrading.

It might be a moot point.. perhaps we''ll just go with another ring all together. In a way it seems kind of lame to ''upgrade'' an engagement ring... Its the memory and thoughts that count afterall. If she wants a bigger rock (after we get a house and I pay back all of my loans) she can probably find an entirely new ring and setting.

So.. do you think .85ct princess center + ~.125ct pears on either side will look ok? I need someone with more experience and imagination than me.

I''d guess the JA setting could have the center head lowered so it is not up quite so high. I love the setting!

I prefer the Tiffany...the JA one is pretty, but that is one tall profile! If they can lower it a bit it may be a bit safer to wear.

Yes I agree, all of those rings can be made with a low profile...so they won't sit up so high!
