Hi,

We are down to picking between these two round brilliant solitaire rings. Please tell me which ring is better and why. Here are the GIA reports:

#1 1.01 carat H VS1
6.51-6.57 x 3.93mm
depth: 60.1%
table: 58%
girdle: thin to medium, faceted
culet: very small
polish: very good
symmetry: very good
fluorescence: none

#2 1.22 carat F VS1
6.85-6.93 x 4.17mm
depth: 60.5%
table: 61% <--------is this a little too big?
girdle: slightly thick
culet: none
polish: excellent
symmetry: very good
fluorescence: none

Thanks!

Nemo, there really isn't enough information to compare these stones.

The crown/pavilion angles are significant in determining the make of the stone. Perhaps the vendor can provide you with a Sarin report to get those details?

I know there may not be enought info but I could only get the GIA reports.

We like the rings but just want to pick a *better* diamond over the other, if it's possible to tell. If not, I think we're leaning towards the higher color (bigger too

).

Oh, and prices are not a factor here, for us.

Al is right --- you really need the crown and pavilion angles to know the whole story. #1's table is closer to ideal than #2, but #2 has great size, color and clarity, so you really need to evaluate it's cut and you don't have all the info. Cut makes the biggest difference on the stone's "performance", so ask the vendors for sarin reports to get the whole story. They should be able to supply them for you -- most manufactures provide them with the stones.

I'm not an expert, but I would worry less about numbers and more about how the diamond performs in person and in different lighting. Have you compared the stones side-by-side in regular light & in daylight? If it were my choice, I'd go with #2 because of the quality & size, even though the dimensions might not be exactly "ideal".

Okay, let me be completely honest and say that I should've posted the question two days ago. We've already bought #2 yesterday and perhaps are experiencing a little buyer's remorse after finding out the table % is a little big. These two rings were our choices and they both looked great and shined (but not sure if #2 shined as much because of its big table). Side by side we could see a little yellow color in #1 and we preferred white so we bought #2.

Sorry for not being forthcoming at first but I guess I wanted to see if people would make the same choice as we did without knowing that we've bought #2 already.

The rings are from a well known high end store, we know it won't be crap but just want to see if it's really really really good.

Oh, it's not from Tiffany's so don't flame me!

no flame here.....

Congratulations on your purchase. What matters the most is what your eyes likes best. Color makes a difference and size does too, so I can understand wanting the whiter and/or bigger stone. If you've seen it and you love it, don't look back. Be happy with it and enjoy your engagement!

Thanks lop! I will enjoy my ring. Just am a *tiny* bit concerned about the 61% table -- is it "bad" or "not-so-good"?

By the way, I just emailed the rep who sold us the ring to provide a Sarin report and he asked me what it was!

61% is out of the current 'ideal" range, but the performance of a stone really depends on how all the measurements work together, and at the end of the day, what appeals to your eyes. Mara used to have a stone with a larger table, and it gave her the benefit of looking larget than the standard stone for the same carat weight.

I'm not an expert -- especially when you get into non-typical measurements, but I assume you need the other angles to get more evaluation beyond what your eye sees. If anyone else has opinions on this table size, please chime in!

A 61% table is hard to interpret without the full set of cut parameters as noted above. Although we tend to be cut conscious here on PS, it's only because the online diamond experience is difficult to navigate without having more information. That said, the most important test is the "eyeball test" and if the beauty of the stone agrees with you, then the numbers almost become a secondary consideration. Congrats on your purhcase! Be sure to post pics!

Thanks for your congrats! I am very excited but won't see the ring for a few weeks as it's being resized and engraved.

I agree. If you've already bought it, then it was pleasing enough to your eye to commit your dollars to.

That being so, stop worrying about the data and just enjoy the stone.

Yes, congrats on your engagement!
I'm sure you will be very happy with the ring once it's mounted. There's a tool on this site (that I just found yesterday, BTW) where you can type in the diamond specs and it will tell you whether it's in the ideal range, or if it was worth what you paid, if it has more fire than light return etc. I'll have to try to find it again so you can check it out.

okay, found it:
