Which pricescope sources will provide ASETs upon request?

Obviously most of the sources don't provide ASET images for each diamond. But I'm willing to go through their database and handpick a few, and ask them if they can provide ASET images. Which sources will actually be willing to do this for you? I know B2C does this and I've found some great diamonds through them but wanted to know which other vendors I should be looking through their databases. Definitely uncomfortable buying without an ASET image (I'm no good at reading idealscopes).

I'm very curious- where did you learn to interpret ASET images?
Are you looking at round or fancy shapes?

The reason I am asking is because I have not found an impartial method of reading asets published...well, anywhere.

ASETs are immensely helpful when buying a diamond. I would not spend thousands of dollars on a diamond without one. Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, High Performance Diamonds, and Victor Canera provide those and more on all their in house stones and on any they call in for you. James Allen will allow you to choose three stones to request ASETs or idealscope images.

(You have to ignore comments discouraging you about ASET images because there are vendors who choose not to use them so they can sell less well cut stones.)

FYI, we do provide ASET images when requested.
I did not discourage use of ASET.
But I am interested in where we can find a guide on how to read and interpret ASET images

Another thing I get disappointed with is the lack of a standard for photographing the ASET view. Depending on who provides it, you never know the conditions for the photo so you can run into issues comparing apples to apples.

Great point pfunk!

Of course part of the claimed benefits of ASET is that is allows a more consistent view as compared to a photograph.
Which I don't find to be a strong point personally partialy for the reason you've stated.

But also because it's not instinctive to be able to understand what they are telling us.
For example, I often see people advised that "red is good"

Sometmes stones with a lot of red look like they have a big ol' hole where the red on ASET is.

Of course this is probably fodder for another thread.

I am not an expert at reading them. But they make it easy to find round stones which are poorly cut...which you will find even amongst GIA excellent stones. I am not looking for super ideal diamonds, just want one that won't be a lemon when I take it home. And there are a lot of lemons out there. So it's nice to know which vendors will let you round up great diamonds via the HCA calculator, and will run ASETs for you.

ANd yes, I have been working with B2C, they have been fantastic. I'd say about 1/2 of their diamonds are with partners who can't provide ASET images...but the remaining 1/2 they will get you Idealscopes and ASETs within 24 hours. So you put together a list of 7-8 diamonds you love from the reports, and they come back with 3 or 4 ASETs. It's a good way to find a needle in a haystack... and you get an ASET that the public can't see, which means nobody will snatch up your hidden treasure while you decide

Where did you learn that GIA is grading poorly cut diamonds as EX cut grade?

Was there a percentage of how many GIA EX cut grade stones are poorly cut?

Where did you learn that GIA is grading poorly cut diamonds as EX cut grade?

Was there a percentage of how many GIA EX cut grade stones are poorly cut?

I simply mean that using B2C, I've viewed ASETs for probably 10-15 "excellent cut" GIA diamonds, and many of them have had significant light leakage.

Actually, most likely not- if that stone is viewed in stereoscopic vision, I seriously doubt any leakage would be possible to detect.
It may be a CG scan- which may include errors.

Anything is possible, but it seems unlikely, given that the idealscope also showed the exact same areas of leakage. Regardless, I can only go based on what I see, and this vendor had provided plenty of ASETs which looked fine. On a larger note, if vendors are unable to take decent ASET images and portray good diamonds this shoddily, I guess they had better learn or lose business!

Me too pfunk (I graduated Maple Grove, btw )

I own an aset scope and an idealscope.
I found I can play with the lighting to give my wife's Princess cut stone more, or less red areas.
The color of the background can make a huge difference too; especially to conceal any light leakage.

andleech, what if you leaned that the leakage present in many princess cuts make them more attractive?

Please allow me to re-phrase that.

Many well cut princess cuts use leakage as an essential element in their light performance.

I agree that the word "attractive" is not truly applicable in this type of discussion.
But then again, the term "superior light performance" is exactly the same.
BTW- the word "leakage" is intrinsically negative in nature- and thus, it's misleading.
There are many cases of beneficial leakage in diamonds. Not in water pipes


I agree that the subject bears a lot more discussion- and that we should not threadjack.
I will be glad to provide pics videos and aset in a new discussion.
For this to happen we'd need to be able to have a discussion where ideas different from the standard PS kool aid are not attacked.

It's amazing what you can learn on the world wide web. Just about anything. Like I said, I do not claim to be an expert but given all my research I am pretty sure I do not want leakage down the center of my round brilliant. On to the next!

And it's worth noting that you've kinda hijacked already, since I was simply looking for sources who give ASETs...do you have any contribution on that?

Pretty much all the PS vendors can offer asets.


Sorry for the theadjack, but I truly was interested in specifically where you learned about ASET.
