Which one? Returning 1.41ct for a bigger 1.5ct stone...

Hi guys,

My girlfriend said "yes" after presenting her with a 1.41ct stone that the Pricescope members help me pick out. However, after looking at the stone and comparing it to others at a local jewelry store, we have decided that we want a slightly larger diamond. So, we will be exchanging the 1.41ct for a 1.5ct stone.

So it's back to the drawing board for me. I've narrowed it down to these two. Which do you prefer.

How much 'larger' are these stones? They are .10 heavier in carat weight, but what is the visual spread difference in millimeters? I think you might have to go heavier in carat weight to notice a difference, unless you were looking at spready (i.e. potentially shallow) diamonds and comparing to your original stone.

+1. I can't imagine 0.09 ct being that much larger spread wise, unless you had a deep diamond to begin with. Plus the price jumps right at that magic number too... go larger than 1.50 if you are at all.

OK - The 1.41ct F-VS1 stone you originally purchased - 7.16x7.20x4.45mm - was an AGA 1A stone with an HCA score of 1.6 (3 Excellents and VG for Spread). This stone had 62% depth and medium-slightly thick girdle.

I ran the numbers for the two new stones you linked to:

1.52ct F-VS2 - HCA score of 0.7 (3 Excellents and VG for Spread) and an AGA total score of 1A (with 1B on Crown Angle) -
7.45 - 7.47 x 4.53 mm - with a 60.7% depth and medium girdle.

1.51ct F-VS2 - HCA score of 1.3 (3 Excellents and VG for Spread) and an AGA total score of 1B (with 2A on Crown Angle) -
7.39 - 7.42 x 4.52 mm - with a 61% depth and thin-medium girdle

I do think either of the 2 new stones will look larger to you, especially compared with the 1.41ct - I personally might be slightly inclined to the 1.52ct but if you are able to examine them both in in person and under different lights, I'd choose the one your eyes preferred.

I do think you are paying more to go above 1.5 carats, but you seem to have considered that. Especially if this is a *forever* stone, I might also take a look at stones close to 1.6 carats for price- and size- comparison just to make sure my dollar is stretching as far and as well as possible.

We have compared a 1.5 stone to a 1.41 stone in person, and we do notice a difference between the two.
Also, kinda strange, but these two over 1.5ct stones actually cost less then my 1.41ct at the time for some reason, so I will be actually saving money by getting either of these stones.

B2C jewels does not provide an ideal-scope so I would have to purchase both to compare the two side by side, and that will be too expensive for me to do. I'm also leaning toward diamond #2 at this point.

When I look at the specs of your diamond now vs. these two, then yes 0.30mm is enough to see a difference I feel. I was only thinking it would only be 0.10mm bigger than your current stone...

B2C jewels does not provide an ideal-scope so I would have to purchase both to compare the two side by side, and that will be too expensive for me to do. I'm also leaning toward diamond #2 at this point.

Contact ID Jewlery and use their best price program. They will be able to call in both stones for you and take ideal-scope/aset pictures, and possibly beat the price.

Okay, I contacted ID Jewelry and they cannot obtain the stones for me. So, the only thing I can go by is the GIA report. Any opnions would be appretiated.

Should I be concerned with the feather inclusion on the pavilion side? Is the crown angle too steep at 35.5 degrees?

Heck no. In real life, not at all, in terms of PS slightly.

My stone has a 33 CA coupled with a 40.8 PA and 15% CH. That is a BRIGHT stone, and the flashes of fire when I'm in sorta direct lighting is amazing! Dude, I was worried too, until I saw this...



I don't know if it's truly attributed to the angle combo, but man... it has fire. When in diffuse daylight, I'd have to say most, if not ALL facets are lit up in some way. Good luck with your choice!

I was ready to pick diamond #2 until I saw that on the HCA chart, the plot is outside the outlined box. To my understanding, the two boxes outlined in the HCA chart represent AGS ideal and GIA excellent stones. Is this correct? Can someone explain why stone #2 scores HCA 0.7 which falls right in the middle of the HCA red zone, scores AGA 1A, but does not plot in the AGS or GIA box in the HCA chart?

Also, which stone would give more brilliance and scintillation as oppose to fire. My fiance said she would rather have a more brilliant stone and less fire.
