When an appraiser references the GIA certificate number, he should reference the number on the left and not the one beneath the barcode.. is that correct?
That''s the one that I reference and it is the one that most dealers will refer to when they talk about lab reports. I include a copy of the entire report in every appraisal where I reference a report from another lab so I suppose it would work with either one since they are both unique to that particular stone. Most report''s that I''ve seen from other appraisers will use the Report number in their references but I wouldn''t go so far to say that it''s wrong to use the other one but it certainly is unusual. When people call GIA to discuss the details on a report, this is usually the number used but I would expect them to be able to reference the stone from either one. The appraiser is describing the property, which includes describing the lab report. I see no problem as long as the description of the report is sufficient to identify exactly which report is being discussed.
