Hello all!

I continue on my quest for a pear shaped diamond. I have found two that interest me currently, but I''m very indecisive. I need help and all your expert advice. Both are from James Allen.

Diamond 1:
This one captured my heart a few weeks ago, but then was removed from the online inventory so I figured it had been sold...so I convinced myself that it wasn''t the diamond for me. Well, now it''s back! Ahh.
2.38 carat D VS2
Depth: 64.2%
Table: 57%
Girdle: Very Thin to Thick, faceted
Polish: G
Symmetry: VG
Cutlet: none
Fluorescence: none
11.24 x 7.49 x 4.81
L/W ratio: 1.50

Diamond 2:
3.02 carat F SI2 (I think it looks really clean for a SI2)
Depth: 63.3%
Table: 53%
Girdle: Slightly Thick
Polish: G
Symmetry: VG
Cutlet: Very Small
Flourescence: none
12.53 x 7.91 x 5.01

I can't see the images, as my computer is having some stupid problem at the moment

, but personally I'd go for the first one. The reasons are: I like fatter pears, I'd rather have the VS2 than the SI2, and finally, the difference is weight/ measurements is not big enough to justify going two colour grades and two clarity grades lower.

Well, that is a tough decision...I prefer the fatter one (the 2.38). I''m just looking at the shape of the diamond
and not the numbers. But the other one isnt bad either

. I wish they had a better picture of the 3 carat.

The D looks best to me, ask for Idealscope images for each and also ask their gemologist Julianna to look at both to help you determine which is best, whether much of a bow tie is visible in each and of course whether the SI2 is eyeclean. Also ask if they can run a Sarin scan to get the crown height of each. And check with the D that the very thin part of the girdle isn't in a vulnerable area to make the stone prone to chipping.

I personally like elongated pears, the 1.50 might be too phat for my own taste... My pear has a 1.69 ratio and its perfect for my taste.
Then again, on pears, you have to see the stone to fully appreciate it, its hard to go only by numbers. The second one, I''d want to see it to make sure of the eyeclean factor...

This...

I like the 3 carat one better...they both are gorgeous stones.

I like the 2.38 better based on the pictures - it seems more symmetrical with a smaller bowtie.

I like the smaller one.

I wonder if that larger one is eyeclean at SI2. Pics can be quite deceiving, so you need to have it eyeballed.

Thanks so much for all the replies so far! It seems like the smaller stone is the favorite. I do prefer a fat pear, so I like the l/w ratio, but the other one doesn''t look too bad to me and fits within my personal l/w preference range of 1.5 to 1.6. The 2.38 carat is the front runner for me as well...I think the stone is beautiful, I can''t see a bow-tie, and I love that it''s a D and a vs2.

The only drawback is that I was hoping for something with a min. 2.5 carats.

Is there really going to be a noticible difference in terms of size?

Also, about the F SI2...the customer service lady told me that she considered it to be eyeclean. I don''t know if she was simply looking at the same photo as I was, or if she had seen the actual diamond.

Make sure you make your expectations clear concerning the eyecleanliness of a diamond, for example if you don't want to see any visible inclusions from any angle at close scrutiny, make sure you tell the vendor that so you are both on the same page.

Next step would be to ask for Idealscope images of each pear. Also pears can vary with face up size or spread and once you get into this size range you notice any size differences less, so this pear might not look much smaller at all than a 2.5 ct, it depends on the cut quality and weight distribution.

Hi Abbylia -

I love your stones, especially your first pic of the 2.38 pear. I just came back from a big pear "quest," and wanted to let you know that, while the ASET and IS scans I had, as well as the regular photos, were all very useful, they did not enable me to make a final choice. I went to the vendor (Jonathan @ Good Old Gold) and saw the three pear candidates lined up next to each other. While they were all beautiful stones, there were differences and characteristics that I would NOT have seen from just the scans and the photos. It was these differences/characteristics that finally helped me decide.

Also, re: size, the "look" of a stone''s size can be very different from its actual carat weight. Of the 3 stones I looked at, one was .15 less than another one and yet looked exactly the same size.

If these are the two stones that you''ve narrowed it down to, or even if you want to continue looking, is there anyway for you to contact a vendor you trust (and whose shop you can visit) so that he can arrange for your final # of candidate stones to be sent to him, and for you to decide from seeing them in person?

That''s what I would recommend :)

Good luck - both stones are beautiful.
