I was just wondering which of the four C''s was the most important to you when you decided to buy your diamond. Why?

cut cost clarity(eyeclean) ct color

Went down one color for more ct wt but stayed in the colorless to me range.

cut, color (above H), clarity between eye clean SI2 and VS2 gets you the biggest for the buck

Cut, carat, clarity, colour.

No point getting a diamond unless it is well cut - has to be number 1 - I don't want a lifeless glassy blob!

Carat - I am a size Queen!

Clarity - I will go as low as possible but still eyeclean

Colour - I will go really low here as I love the warmer shades - I have an L I love!

Well, my 4 c''s in order of importance are:

cut

color (above H)

carat- I like a larger stone

clarity- (as long as it is eye-clean, great!)

hmm..this sounds familiar, or else I''m just experiencing some deja vu.

either way,

cut first - always
then color because i''m just like that
clarity - which should really be a tie to color, but since i don''t have that option, i''ll do it this way.
then carat - i don''t care how big the diamond is, as long as it''s cut amazingly well, is completely colorless and damn near flawless.

Don''t work that way...

Instead, have a bottom no-go for clarity and given the purpose and design, some preference for size and shape. Perhaps most would have a bottom no-go threshold for color too, but I just like them all, with a distinct preference for anything that shows some color, even if not much.

I don''t think a ranking of Cs would lead to the same choices (as a matter of fact, I know it does not). So, I would rather stick to this recipe and think of the looks of the object rather than a bunch of abstract ''features''.

My 2c

For me it''s cut and color. I don''t care much about clarity or carat weight.

I''m not sure you''ll find a PSer that isn''t going to pick Cut as the most important C.
Cut, Cut, Cut, the brilliance is in the cut.

cut
color (d-h)
clarity (si1+)
carat

1-Cut
2-Carat
3-Clarity (VS1)
4-Color (I or better)

1) Cut
2) Carat
3) Color
4) Clarity

1. cut
2. clarity and color equally important - I''d never buy below F VS1
3. size

1. Cut
2. Color
3. Clarity

Hey Kenny - I''m curious, why so high on the clarity?

Mine are:
Cut
Color
Clarity (doesn''t matter as long as it is eye-clean)
Carat (whatever I can get for the budget)

For me...

Cut (sparkle IS the most important)
Clarity (I am eagle eyed and don''t want to spot anything, no matter how minute so I stick to nothing below a VS)
Carat (I would go for the largest size I can afford within the cut and clarity parameters I''ve set)
Color (my least important because I''ve seen beautiful diamonds in virtually every color category, so as long as it''s clean and sparkly and I can afford it...)

I wouldn't buy a diamond below VS1 because I work under a very fine Zeiss Stereo microscopes daily.
I'd spend all day being bothered by a gigantic globs of black gunk that I paid thousands of dollars for.

Even the cloud in my GIA VS1 jumps out at me.
I just wasn't willing to spend more $$$ on a VVS, but I can understand why people do.

My next stone will probably be D or E VVS1.
I want at least one imperfection so I can identify my stone.

I respect that others draw the line at eye-clean.

Kenny that must be a real pain when buying diamonds! I remember Wink saying he has a client who can spot VS inclusions and point them out to him across his desk!

Most important thing to take away from this thread: CUT = teh w1n

What do you mean, exactly, by cut? Premium cut, etc?

By cut, we mean how well cut the diamond is. If it is badly cut, the diamond will not sparkle. It will look dull and lifeless. If it is well cut (not necessarily branded), it will sparkle a lot and give off fire (coloured sparkles) in most lighting condition and can even mask the colour and clarity of the diamond from the top down to a certain degree.

Cut parameters that maximize performance. Not the "shape" of the stone.

Cut
Clarity
Carat
Color
Chocolate
