Which movies really just don''t hold up over time?

Sabine''s post had me thinking...

DH and I are pretty big movie fanatics, and we love to introduce each other films that the other hasn''t seen (DH being a filmmaker, he has a lot more to show me than I do for him!)...

BUT...sometimes, movies that we haven''t seen for a number of years just really, REALLY do not hold up for us personally.

Like, a lot of movies I loved as a child I still love--Pee-Wee''s Big Adventure, Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid spring to mind...but some films I loved as a teenager (see: Chasing Amy), I just can''t even believe myself!

What about you? What films did you love as a young ''un and now you just can''t watch all the way through? What about the ones you still love all these years later...even though, in some cases, you may realize that others who didn''t share your appreciation for it when they were children probably wouldn''t think too much of them?

Mannequin was one of the first "grown up" movies I ever saw (I sneaked out of my room at night and watched from around the corner, then raced back to bed when it was over so my parents wouldn''t find out!). I remembered it being awesome...until I watched it a few years ago when I was in college. Definitely didn''t hold up well.

I also remember thinking that the Bill & Ted movies were pretty great, but I don''t think I could even bring myself to rent one now.

The brat pack movies, especially Breakfast Club and St. Elmo''s Fire, didn''t hold up too well for me.

I still laugh whenever I watch Airplane!

9 to 5. It comes off as really dated.

Clueless is pretty dated but I think it captures the 90s. I just watched it last week and as a tween back in the day a lot of the jokes and drug lingo went really over my head.

I think a lot of childhood movies hold up if you loved them as a kid, but don't show well to others who didn't grow up with them. For some reason I never watched The Goonies as a kid and only saw it a few years ago. I hate it

I know that means I'm going againts my generation, but it's just not a good movie when you watch it for the first time in your 20s. DH also loves The Burbs, which I don't particularly enjoy. It's good if you watched it as a kid, but doesn't really hold up for adults watching for the first time.

I can't think of any movies I loved as a kid that I don't like now, honestly. I still love all of the Snoopy movies and the Disney movies I grew up with. I probably watched Newsies 100 times as a kid, and I can freely admit now that it's *not* a great movie, but I would happily sit down and watch it again if only for the nostalgia.

Sba, had to comment on Clueless - that's still one of my favorite movies! Haha. I think it's hilarious.

Sacrilege! Or maybe I''m a dork, but I love that movie. :)

I think the first one is great and is still 80s cheesy perfection. The sequel (Bogus Journey?) wasn''t even good when they made it and definitely doesn''t hold up.

For Christmas last year I got my ex's 7 and 10 year old boys the movie Emmitt Otter's Jugband Christmas. My siblings and I never grew tired of that movie. His boys couldn't even sit through it because it didn't hold their attention. Maybe if there were more things blowing up with gun toting aliens.

elrohwen, yep, you are totally right! I love LOTS of musicals because I used to love them when I was young, but I can recognize that they do mostly kinda suck (except for Funny Girl! As a Jewish chick growing up in the Northeast who loved musicals, I can never get enough Barbra! LOL!) And yeahhh, I''m not sure how this reflects on me, but I still love Clueless too, hehe...

I honestly think Clueless is a classic! I don''t think it''s a cheesy ''90s movie at all. Every time I watch it I find some other smart joke that I missed before. It''s like Mean Girls - it seems silly on the surface, but it''s much more smart than it appears.

I love Clueless!

Elro, I''m with you on the Goonies, and I''ll add A Christmas Story to the "It''s only good if you grew up with it" list.

I will say that even though I love them, the Indiana Jones movies are way cheesier now.

Strangely, I hated Christmas Story with a passion as a kid, but now I think it''s funny! I don''t love it, but I''ll watch it.

I also didn''t particularly like Willy Wonka as a kid but now I adore it.

And the Indiana Jones movies are still awesome! Though Hidden Temple was not nearly as good as I remembered it. And the new one is cheese and a half!

I completely agree with this - FI and I grew up with very different movies, and while we still love our own for the most part we really don't care for the other's!

Indy is a classic. Specially Last Cruzade. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery together was pure magic!

I still love Clueless, too, but part of that is that I think it was a pretty smart adaptation of Austen''s Emma into something that teens at that time could relate to, and as a literature nerd, that''s something I always appreciate. When I was little, I was OBSESSED with the movie, Mac and Me. Now, I''m horrified that I was ever so into it! Oh, and at 26 years of age, I still won''t walk directly in front of a sewer grate thanks to the trauma instilled by It, but when I watched the movie as an adult, I was like, really? THIS is what scared the $%& out of me?!

No kidding. My family doesn''t do movies or tv and my hubby grew up in the family video store, so were are totally different.
I have actually rewatched most of what I really liked and I still love them. Disney, Totaro, Princess bride, Willow, Clueless, real genius were the main ones I can think of, but I grew up watching a lot of classics like Philadelphia story and Mel Brooks.

The only one I have found that now baffles me is the last unicorn. When it was over, I tried to explain why it was magically to me as a kid to my DH, but I couldn''t seem to figure it out myself.
